What a sublimely terrific scene! There's always so much love for actors playing the main characters (Ford/Han, Hamill/Luke, Fisher/Leia, Prowse-JEJ/Vader, Cushing/Tarkin) and rightly so, I don't take anything away from them. But, man, oh, man, this scene would not be anywhere near as good without the greatly underrated acting skills of Don Henderson (who played Cassio Tagge, the Imperial general urging caution) and Richard LeParmentier (who played Conan Motti, the arrogant Imperial general who fell afoul of Vader).

The way those two played off each other at the beginning of the scene. It sets the tone and immediately informs the audience of so much with so little!

The way Don Henderson takes a breath in mid-sentence AND CONTINUES TO SPEAK as Tarkin walks in and allows Peter Cushing to speak over him, to overlap his reply to LeParmentier. It makes it sound and seem natural the way a real conversation and interruption would go, and not just actors taking turns reciting lines.

The way Don Henderson reacts to LeParmentier's Motti being force-choked by Vader - OMG, that reaction(!) adds so many layers to the tension in the room! The fluttering of his eyelids and ever so subtle swallowing reflecting his fear, his empathy(!) with Motti, almost like he feels the stranglehold Vader has on his rival.

And LeParmentier! OMG, the way his last couple of words are semi-cut off because he is in mid-sentence as Vader chokes him! And that thing he does with his throat, almost as if there is an invisible hand squeezing! How the heck did he do that?!!

Amazing, amazing performances from two actors/characters we never see again for the rest of the movie!

Forgetting the sci fi aspects, this scene is all about how the upper class can control the masses of minions below them. Tool is fear, a powerful, cheap and effective weapon that continues to control humans even today.

another thing i like about this scene is Darth Vader's own faith. Sometimes the "evil" guys are just more commited to what they do than the other side and that's a lesson

The actor that plays the officer is what really sells the scene. The way he actually makes it looks like he's being choked and immediately drops like a puppet with its strings cut after vader speaks is absolutely perfect

sabotabo

he set the standard for what beng choked by an invisible hand looks like and i don't think people realize that

Iron heart
