WATER
S.C.A.R.S Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this

I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

Overall Meaning

The song "Smoke on the Water" by S.C.A.R.S starts with the band recounting their journey to Montreux on the Lake Geneva shoreline with a mobile studio to record music. However, the excitement was cut short by a tragic event. A man, whose identity is unknown, set fire to the Montreux Casino with a flare gun, burning the place to the ground. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, who were slated to perform at the casino the following day, were staying nearby and witnessed the flames from their hotel room. This event inspired S.C.A.R.S to create the iconic song whose lyrics narrate the incident.

The second verse of the song talks of the destruction wrought by the fire, highlighting the efforts of "Funky Claude," a roadie for the band who helped to evacuate people from the burning building. After the fire, the band had to search for another place to record music as "Swiss time was running out" and they were under pressure to deliver on their recording commitments. Eventually, they found the Grand Hotel, which was cold and empty at the time. They transformed the space with "a few red lights and a few old beds" and made a place to create music. Despite the setback, the band used this opportunity to make the best of their situation, creating a space that allowed them to work hard and produce good music.

Overall, "Smoke on the Water" is a song about turning adversity into an opportunity. The story of the Montreux Casino fire is a tragic one, but through this experience, S.C.A.R.S was able to create an iconic song that has gone down in history. The lyrics of the song are a vivid and haunting tribute to the terrible conflagration and the efforts of those who fought to save lives.
