Big Red House
S.I.M Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Resting all the time
Big bed in the center
A living room designed to make dying feel better
Told me you would try to make it out this winter
The wolverines, the lions
The big house in November
Remember when you said
That if it got like this
You'd go below the freeway to score some heroin
Would it be tone deaf to cry
And make it all about me
When I can see you're hurting
You're saying words that don't make sense
I try to understand you by watching what your eyes do
Spacing out the lines
Folding up the letters
The check you left behind
Even though you never met her
Cheers at old Gillette
You called me on a landline
Stuck inside a tv on the heels of such a long fight
Would it be tone deaf to cry
And make it all about me
When I can see you're hurting
You're saying words that don't make sense
I try to understand you by watching what your eyes do
Said you could use a final trip

So she pushed you to the kitchen
And you stood up for a second

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of S.I.M's song "Big Red House" paint a vivid picture of a place where one finds solace and respite from the challenges of life. The opening line, "Resting all the time," suggests a sense of weariness and exhaustion, perhaps referring to someone who has been battling their own demons. The mention of a big bed in the center and a living room designed to make dying feel better implies a desire for comfort and escape from pain.

The lyrics then shift to a conversation between two people, with one person expressing their determination to overcome their struggles during the winter. The references to wolverines and lions may symbolize strength and resilience. The mention of the "big house in November" could be a reference to the Michigan Stadium, known as "The Big House," where football games take place.

The song takes a poignant turn as the singer remembers a past conversation in which the other person mentioned resorting to heroin if things got worse. The singer questions whether it would be self-absorbed to feel emotional and make it about themselves when they can clearly see the other person is in pain.

The second verse continues with reflections and memories, mentioning the act of spacing out lines, folding letters, and finding a check left behind by someone who never had the chance to meet the intended recipient. The mention of old Gillette and a landline call evoke a sense of nostalgia and a bygone era.

The lyrics close with the singer trying to understand the other person by observing their eyes, implying a deep desire for connection and empathy. The mention of a final trip and being pushed to the kitchen suggests a moment of decision or self-reflection, where the other person briefly stands up, perhaps indicating a glimmer of hope or strength.

Overall, "Big Red House" is a contemplative and emotionally charged song that explores themes of struggle, empathy, and human connection in a place that offers solace and temporary escape.

I thought it was just another single colour build challenge. Also not entirely sure (based on what I think I'm understanding from the comments) how a re-recording of her own album is somehow now her version as if the other wasn't. I guess I'm just used to listening to bands who write, sing & perform their own music so like the first release is always their version. So you might get them doing a cover version of someone else's music, but you don't get them doing a cover of their own music because that makes zero sense.
