Here's a tip that might help you take the next step, when the time comes: Steve's 6-note soloing technique uses the minor pentatonic scale. With the G chord it's G minor pentatonic, with A it's A minor pentatonic, and so on.

Minor pentatonic gives you a blues-rock sort of feel over major chords, and you can play it over minor chords as well.

And if you learn a few simple pentatonic patterns, and how those patterns connect across the fretboard, you can start using your entire fretboard to solo. :-)

This video has finally explained how you can apply a basic solo pattern to any chord you're playing in by finding the root note on the bottom E string and playing the pattern. It's the first time i've seen someone thoroughly explain that to me and why learning the root notes on E can be helpful and how to fit it in with solo practicing.

SO REFRESHING! Thank you for making this more approachable than any other guitar teacher I've ever seen!! I took guitar lessons as a child and I HATED IT! I couldn't understand any of the theory that went behind it all and the teacher had me trying to learn boring, classical songs like Ode To Joy. 🙄 As if I wanted to play that instead of good, old rock n roll. 😏 Eventually, he and I came to an agreement that I shouldn't be wasting my grandmother's money on his lessons and I needed to just give it up if I wasn't going to practice & "take it seriously."

I think if I had a teacher like you I would have actually liked playing and would have wanted to keep with it.

This guy is the best guitar teacher I have ever seen. His attitude and his insights are perfect. Also it's great that he doesn't use backing tracks so that we can clearly hear exactly what he's doing. He's even got names for particular techniques ("chord chasing"), and it's obvious that he actually cares that what he's doing works--that students are actually learning. What an awesome teacher.

I can't even imagine what I might have accomplished as a "musician" had I been able to have a teacher like Steve, with his philosophy, 40 years ago when I first tried to learn. Back then it was the opposite, "don't have fun", play scales and memorize theory. Thanks 👍🏻

That's very similar to the comment I just posted. Instead all those years ago you were taught, if you want to solo you need to learn this scale and that scale and so go practice those scales. Had I known this trick, it would have set me on an instant path to having fun.

Me too! Iplayed for years, got to a point and stuck there for more years. I should have taken lessons. Never mind. Now my son has started playing and has got me going again. This time weve got youtube helping haha.
Im very relaxed about it though. It doesnt matter what i do...im hoping my son really enjoys it and keeps at it! Agree, this guys great and doesnt make you feel like a plum. Happy picking!
