She Came Back
S.S.T. Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Been ten long years since the devil laid his fiddle at Johnny's feet,
and it burned inside his mind the way he suffered that defeat.
In the darkest pits of Hell the devil hatched an evil plan
to tempt the fiddle player, for he's just a mortal man.
"The sin of pride," the devil cried, "is what will do you in."
"I thought we had this settled. I'm the best that's ever been!"

Johnny, did you ever know that time keeps marching on?
The coldest hour is the one comes just before the dawn.
The devil's back in Georgia. Will you stand up to the test?
Or will you let the devil be the best?

"Truth is I haven't played much since the baby came in June,
But give me half a minute and I'll get this fiddle back in tune,"
The devil grabbed the golden fiddle out of Johnny's hand and said
"Boy, I'm a fiddle player underground but now I walk upon the land.
Y'all better just be turning back if y'all want this boy to win
'cause practice is the only cure for the predicament he's in!"
"Now, Devil, it would be a sin for you to get my bow,
so you go on back to Hell and to the woodshed I will go!"

Johnny, are you practicing, or will your hands grow cold?
The devil walks the land and plays a fiddle made of gold.
Can you hear the babe a cryin'? Will he ever know
the devil wants his daddy's very soul?

"Before I play, I want to thank you for letting God's own word ring true,
he said you can't be trusted!" "Yeah, so what you gonna do?!"
"Well, you get your fiddle, Devil, if you think that you can win.
'Cause I beat you once, you old dog, and I can whup your butt again!"

John Brown's green, the devil's red.
My little baby loves shortening bread.

The devil's dream's that he can win,
But Johnny's the best that's ever been!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of S.S.T. Band's song "She Came Back" tell the story of Johnny, a talented fiddle player, and his ongoing rivalry with the devil. The song begins by referencing a past encounter where Johnny was defeated by the devil's fiddle-playing skills, causing him great suffering and a feeling of defeat. The devil sees this as an opportunity to tempt Johnny again, as he believes that Johnny's sin of pride will lead to his downfall. However, Johnny is determined to prove himself as the best fiddle player.

The second paragraph reveals that ten years have passed since Johnny's previous encounter with the devil, and during that time, Johnny's life has undergone significant changes, including the birth of his baby in June. Though Johnny hasn't practiced much since then, he is confident that he can regain his fiddle-playing skills to take on the devil once again. However, the devil taunts Johnny and tries to discourage him by asserting his superiority and claiming that Johnny should give up because practice is the only solution to his predicament.

The third paragraph continues with Johnny acknowledging his lack of practice but stating that he will go back to working on his skills. He refuses to let the devil take away his passion and talent, declaring that he won't allow the devil to have his fiddle. This reveals Johnny's determination and willingness to face the challenges posed by the devil.

The final paragraph contains a series of contrasting lines that reflect the ongoing battle between Johnny and the devil. "John Brown's green, the devil's red" signifies the struggle between good and evil, with Johnny representing the good side. The mention of the baby crying suggests that the devil wants to take Johnny's soul, posing a threat to his family and loved ones. However, Johnny remains confident in his abilities and challenges the devil to compete once again, asserting that he has beaten him before and can do so again.

Overall, the lyrics of "She Came Back" portray the story of a talented fiddle player, Johnny, who faces temptation and challenges from the devil. It explores themes of determination, the struggle between good and evil, and the power of music to overcome adversity.

Excellent work digitizing and upscaling this historic classic! Your channel doesn't get enough spotlight, and that's a real shame! You deserve so much better.

Thanks for the kind words! 😊 Glad you enjoyed it!

@Reely Interesting I used an Amiga Toaster to do this, how ironic!

Save the CRT'S!

It's like having T-SQUARE & CASIOPEA (possibly with YMO, Masayoshi Takanaka and the rest to mention here) tandem / tales that's so awesome, so much the intensified excitement going on. Love it❣ 👏👏👏👏👏

Also, the drummer's technique would be something like Akira Jimbo & Hiroyuki Noritake; while the bassist might have Mitsuru Sutoh's & Tetsuo Sakurai's (also Yoshihiro Naruse) funky styles. I might be mistaken, yet it's my own perspective judgment based on their own ways with such respect and absolutely "grinding well". 👍👍

Anyways, thanks for uploading this amazing masterpiece! 🙏

Yeah definitely, if you haven't yet, check out "S.S.T. Band (Sega Sound Team) - Rush A Difficulty(Arrange Ver.)" they actually had Issei Noro of Casiopia credited as a guest for that one back in 89
There was a great interview, sadly fails to load now, called (SEGA 60th anniversary interview with Hiro) where Sega composer Hiroshi Kawaguchi mentions he joined Sega hoping to work on music and found himself in programming until Yu Sazuki ask for his help in Hang-On, Hiro said that he "had been in an instrumental band as a hobby and had made copies of songs by people like Masayoshi Takanaka, Cassiopeia, and Naoya Matsuoka (the “leader” of Latin fusion music in Japan), and Yu had known that. Apparently he also knew that I had wanted to be on the sound team, so he offered that to me."

Its was a nice and short interview but really shines a light on why those incredible musicians and SEGA VG music feel so alike.
