Not Tonight
S.T.R. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Outside of the party where it's gettin' too loud
It feels like we're the only ones alone in the crowd
Chat college and politics in time that we spend
You look back and you say you think you lost all your friends
And I'm hoping that it's all my fault
Yeah, I'm hoping that it's all my fault

Hey, let's not be alone tonight
Hey, let's not be alone tonight (You don't have to be alone)
No it don't, no it don't mean love
But it might, but it might be love
Hey, let's not be alone tonight (You don't have to be alone)

Not wrong if you come on strong, 'cause life is too short
I like how we get along like snow and New York
All good if you change your mind, you know where I stand
Look back and I say to you I lost all my friends
And I know you know it's all your fault
Yeah, I know you know it's all your fault

Hey, let's not be alone tonight
Hey, let's not be alone tonight (You don't have to be alone)
No it don't, no it don't mean love
But it might, but it might be love
Hey, let's not be alone tonight (You don't have to be alone)

And I know it's gotta be my fault
Yeah, I know it's gotta be my fault

La la la la la
La la la la la, yeah
La la la la la
La la la la la, yeah
La la la la la
La la la la la
La la la la la
La la la la la

Hey, let's not be alone tonight (You don't have to be alone)
Hey, let's not be alone tonight (You don't have to be alone)
No it don't, no it don't mean love
But it might, but it might be love
Hey, let's not be alone tonight (You don't have to be, hey!)
You don't have to be alone tonight
Hey, You don't have to be alone tonight (You don't have to be alone)

No it don't, no it don't mean love

But it might, but it might be love
Hey, let's not be alone tonight (You don't have to be alone)

Overall Meaning

S.T.R.'s "Not Tonight" is a song about two individuals who feel lost and alone in a sea of people at a party. The song starts with the couple outside the party where it's too loud, and they feel like they are the only ones alone in the crowd. They engage in small talk about college and politics, getting to know each other. The girl reflects on her relationship with her friends, feeling like she has lost them while the guy hopes that it's all his fault.

As the song progresses, both of them acknowledge that they might be each other's only solace in the moment. The song features a repetitive chorus encouraging the couple to not be alone tonight. The lyrics make it clear that the night doesn't necessarily have to end in love, but it could potentially spark one.

Overall, the song speaks to the relatable feeling of loneliness and the yearning to connect with someone on a deeper level. The verses capture the awkwardness and uncertainties that come with trying to form a bond with someone new, and the chorus provides a hopeful outlook that tonight just might be the night that everything changes.

One of the best concerts I've ever seen. They played Rundgren's and The Car's hits. And Todd doing scissor kicks at 60 something...

Mr. C

When Rundgren was asked how, looking back, he would characterize his time with The New Cars, he replied "Bittersweet. You know, we all put a lot of effort into it, but we got practically nothing out of it but aggravation".
I bet if they reunited and toured after this covid crap, they could pack venues again. Todd is perfect to take the remaining members to another step, even if the first try didn't turn out as planned.

You have three of the very best 70s/80s bands right there together; Cars, Utopia and Tubes ! How cool is that ! :-)

So much fun! Elliott and Greg jamming with Todd and Kasim, plus Prairie Prince on skins. Awesome lineup. Greg Hawkes was the reason I started playing in bands. The Cars' first album came out when I turned 16 and got out of high school, and suddenly every band in my town needed a keyboardist.
