Our medic was a life saver. They usually do not carry a weapon. They have enough to carry as it is. His name was Kelly Graham. He was supposed to come and spend a few days in my back yard telling each other war stories. He died last year. I will miss him deeply. Rest in piece Doc. My father served in Vietnam from 1971-72 and came home a wounded veteran. He overcame the handicap of an amputee, but, couldn't shake the addictions that followed him home. He was my Hero and he died young, just 57. I am proud of my military upbringing, and always support the fine men and women who serve. I just wish they didn't have to.

I am a student on rotation at a VA hospital. I have the great honor of taking care of some of these heroes. Even though many made it back without being shot, I’m always saddened to see the lingering effects of PTSD, depression, and agent orange exposure. The VA system helps, but we need to be doing more for our Veterans, they deserve the absolute best we can give them.

@Jax It's not so much the to be low voice because you don't want to alert or give signs to the enemy. It's that the reporter truly is showing bravery. Not a flick blink of emotion. He could be crying or showing how nervous his voice was. The guy was solid rock. No emotions. Shots being fired in all directions. Even the soldiers are ducking.

Hats off to all of these young men for their service and bravery. I've hiked in the jungles of the Philippines and Thailand. The thought of a hidden and deadly enemy presenting itself at any moment on top of the conditions presented by the jungle and terrain (let alone the weight of their backpacks and ammunition) is almost incomprehensible. It would be interesting to know what became of each of these men. Wish them the best.

My grandfather is a Vietnam Vet, he moved from Louisiana to Florida after the war. Has been there ever since, loved to ride motorcycles and fish & mowing his grass. He has pretty bad PTSD but still has a killer sense of humor!

My grandpa was in the navy during Vietnam and had a couple friends who were in the army and went into combat in the jungle and my grandpa lost contact with them we went to the memorial and he didn’t find their names but he was so sad / shocked about the amount of names were on the wall he had to sit down luckily my grandpa is okay and well but to this I say thank you for your service to his buddies and to everyone else who served in nam

My father was drafted as a Marine and I never heard him speak a word of what he went through and I just thought he wasn’t ever on the front lines. Even though he survived Vietnam he lost his battle to Lung cancer. The last few weeks of his life he spoke about what he went through and brought a album of pictures that I never knew existed. Part of his stories was that he was involved with the Khe Sanh siege being constantly bombarded by artillery, snipers and assaults on the base for over 2 months. The destruction I seen from his pictures he took are breathtaking. It puts in perspective of what these brave men went through fighting for their lives from a overwhelming force. Growing up my dad was always the tough guy who never express any emotions. I never seen him shed a tear, he was stoic to say the least. But hearing him talk about what he went through, how terrified he was, I saw tears flow from his eyes and I saw a completely different side of my father that I never knew existed. My father was deeply affected looking at these pictures and it dawn on me that this was the first time he looked at these pictures since he put them in the album over 50 years ago. It’s no wonder we never seen them or ever heard of them cuz it was a painful remember of what he and other brave men went through. It truly makes me proud that he’s me father and something I will never forget

My Grandpa was drafted in the Army and he never once talked about the war. The only time he mentioned anything close to it was when I was 6 and aimed my toy gun at him. He looked me dead in the eyes and said “never aim a gun at anyone unless you plan on pulling the trigger.” At that moment I could see the pain in his eyes and knew that he’s experienced some incomprehensible things. He died from cancer that spread all throughout his body at age 65 when I was 11.

I was in the lottery and my number was 262 if I was born one day earlier I would have been drafted. I wouldn't know how I would have handled myself in a war even though I would have gone. I'm 72 now and I can't imagine how those soldiers felt when they came to home being called baby killers and now we call PTSD. That was a war we should have never gotten involved in. All those guys are heroes. Even though I did eventually joined in 1975, I never was in a war zone. I never considered myself a VET because of that.

It really brings home the true meaning behind the phrase "brothers in arms". You don't have time to have petty squabbles, it comes to collaborate or die. When you are constantly working to have each others backs and essentially keeping each other alive, I'd imagine it becomes much easier to overlook some personality flaws.

My grandpa recently passed away, he was in Vietnam, he was in the Recon 2-60th, 9th infantry. He never talked about it, but he saved a collection of photographs to pass down, that I got to see after he passed, he saved all he could from the war and I learned about his war story then. Not only that but it's his 4th injury. He has 3 purple hearts so if he continued the war after those 2 leg shots he would have gotten a 4th purple heart. But that is obviously not realistic so he was done after that.

You forgot about the VC soldiers. They died protecting their country. The US was the invading country, just like Russia is the invading country now in Ukrain. But funnily enough, now the Russians are seen as bad en the Ukrainians as good. And just like the US soldiers then, most Russians die not for their convictions but because they were drafted to die for the political and economic gains of their leaders. Both wars are wrong, and we should not blame the soldiers, nor make heroes out of them. They are all victims, on all sides.

My grandpa was a medic in Vietnam and got a Purple Heart and a bronze star for bravery. We’re Native American from the Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota. He’s told many stories about risking his life to save others. These men were very brave.

After the way the country treated us natives, and to put that aside and fight for them anyway is really commendable. He’s taught me that forgiving the unforgivable is the way to live your life. Just accept, and heal. Always. That way you’ll have nothing dragging you down. Support your veterans. You don’t have to support the war, just the people.

I will stay here to hear brave stories from these United States Vietnam veterans. Their first welcome was terrible with the name calling not winning the war taking the lives of millions. I am extremely happy how U.S. Vietnam Veterans are treated better now. At the United States Department of Justice, Colonel Euler had this big family picture on the wall. My Dad was a combat surgeon near the Cambo border. He or a colleague likely operated on young Hero. Don’t let anyone ever tell you that these men were anything other than brave, or that they weren’t doing the right thing. They went to help an ally avoid falling under communist dictatorship. Jorgensen 'Hero' relates all of this firsthand in his book 'Acceptable Loss'. It was actually a SP5 Henderson that dragged him back to safety. Jorgensen said getting pulled up through the trees pulled off the bandages and he started bleeding again on the flight. Worse yet, the Army tried charging him for 'losing' his rifle during all of this.

Never in my life have i seen him so serious, but after learning what these young men went through.. and the traitorous treatment of Agent Orange i know why he was afraid for me to join.. Uncle was in the Airforce and he made it most of the way through life without any major health problems till he was around 57-58. Being a mechanic, he was exposed to agent orange and probably many other chemicals. He eventually had loads of health problems show up and he had to get both legs amputated. His health did get a little better but once his wife left him after everything he just couldn't do it. His health declined to the point where he had to stay in the hospital and that is where he passed away. I never got to say goodbye and I never got to go to his funeral because I was away for a vacation at the time and a big storm came through. Even though the storm cleared up it was still 'raining' for a good few weeks. I do have peace of mind knowing that he is no longer suffering physically or mentally anymore though. He held on till he was 67 and that is long enough. RIP Richard 2019.

The thing that's hard to realize is that a lot of times, it is INCREDIBLY hard to discern where incoming fire is coming from in environments like this, or even in barren landscapes if you are taking contact beyond 300 meters or so.

My dad was a teacher in Vietnam. Never talked about it. He wasn’t a tough guy by any means. Grew up on the south side of Chicago near Comisky and after the war worked 3 jobs to put himself through DePaul and moved us to the suburbs in a very very nice area. I wish he was still around but he died in 2010 from cancer months before my 21st birthday and a month before my sister graduated high school. My grandpa was in Iwo Jima and never talked about it either. Just some things were too traumatic to relive for some ppl. Seeing this now it’s awful.

Hi, I am a 73 year old Vietnam Combat Vet (1966 to 1969) USS Providence and In Country at "Monkey Mountain" by Danang. I am on VA Disability from exposure to Agent Orange. I enlisted in the US Navy when I was 17 years old. Three of my High school friends were killed in Vietnam, I was spared. Participated in the TET Offensive 1968.God bless all Vietnam Vets. You are not forgotten.

I was there 72-73 Quang Tri and more and when I got back to our country I was so happy. I was never spit on but did get tons of backlash but once I got out and my hair grew out I was just like everyone else.Finally started wearing my Viet Nam veterans hat about 5 years ago and it blew my mind how many people thanked me for my service. Made me happy but I thought where were these people 50 years ago when I was looking for some kind of assurance that I had not done anything wrong.

@Antonio Gramsci supported the south Vietnamese who were US allies, and tried to defend their freedom against the Communist north. Victory is written by the winners. The north took over, so I don’t blame you for thinking like this… but there were reasons. Good intentions. And they were soldiers fighting for their country. They were/are still heroes.

You go out to the bar with your buddy and someone comes up punching your friend, you gonna just walk away? Or are you gonna step in and help your friend? I don’t think I’ll ever forget the face change of my great grandpa and great uncle when my brother and I had to interview them for a school project and asked about their experience ☹️ they only mentioned little things and I was still young (11) I remember my grandpa telling me he was on a bus with prisoners and they had their tongues cut out.. the sounds of bullets and bombs.. How they were treated returning home when they were just boys and young men that didn’t have a choice always bugged me.

years back there was a guy who did security at a stadium i worked at he was in Vietnam and would tell me some stories. he told me about different traps the Vietnamese would use which were seriously vicious. he told me how people in his platoon would take trophies that were usually ears but sometimes noses and they would wear them as a necklace. that war was on a level of it's own the ptsd seems cruel to be alive after what he told me he goes through.

that is insane. this kid cant be more than 20, has three purple hearts, just got promoted to sargent, perfers to walk point cuz thats where the action is, is literally nicknamed hero and has just been shot in both legs and is just hanging out, talking casuually. that is another level of honor, bravery and valor that is unmatched. nothing but respect for these guys.

My Dad, Walter (Sean) Hohler served from 66-67, came back, married my mom and actually became a business man. His PTSD was always there but under control until his late 60's and early 70's. I was with him when he was diagnosed with 75% PTSD. I unfortunately couldn't get into the army due to my deafness in my right ear, still tried though to get in in 94, my best friend at the time was already on his way to basic training.

My father is Vietnam Veteran. He was drafted and served in 68-69. They were losing alot of men at that time. He did not like to talk about it when I was growing up. We didn't know what PTSD was back then. He has a scar from Vietnam that I do not know how he got it. I asked when I was in elementary school and all he said was "it's none of your damn business." I never asked again. Those boys went through alot and so did their families. They knew that war was pointless but they went. They did what their country asked. Vets we see you...and thank you.

Those were the bloodiest years a good portion of south Vietnam and American deaths came that year because north Vietnam launched an offensive

My husband served in that war...He used to tell me story about Vietnam...and He actually sufferred PTSD but served 30 years...he passed a few years ago...RIP Master Chief...RIP...Thank you for serving Master Chief....

Sergeant Jorgenson, or "Hero" in this video, went on to survive the Vietnam war. He recovered from the wounds to his legs in this video, and stayed in country for several more months. In the end, he was awarded one Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, a Combat Infantry Badge, and three Purple Hearts. He served in Germany after the war... as a journalist.

He is now happily retired and living in Washington state.

I was an old man at 24. Did nine months in the central highlands with the Army's 4 th Inf Div. Got hit in March of 69 and lost both legs. Was able to talk with the medic and really didn't feel any pain until I was air lifted to an aid station. I'm 73 yrs old now and I still can't figure out if our involvement in Vietnam was right or wrong. I can not complain because I have a great wife of 44 years and a grown son and daughter. Our son served in the middle east for nine months and the proudest I have ever been in my life is to have him next to me and salute the American flag our Memorial Day services.

We have footage and people saw it happen. My mom saw the plane crash into the Pentagon as she was driving home right by it. My dad was a first responder for the DC area and went there to do whatever he needed to do. How do you think the families of the people on those planes and in the buildings feel if you told them "it didn't happen"

Started watching this video thinking it would be interesting and informative. I’m not saying it wasn’t, but it was far more disturbing than anything else. Just the realization that most of these guys were younger then than I am now and had lives and families back home, and then come under fire from a hidden enemy that they will likely never even see. I’ve read a lot about Vietnam, but seeing it captured on video in this context is a whole other feeling.

And it was on the 7 o clock news every night for what seemed like my entire youth. Every night reports from the battlefields and weekly body counts. American 223 dead, 604 wounded. Vietnamese 905. dead. Over and over and it seemed it would never end and that I would be going as soon as ai got old enough. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14….and then it ended. Timing was on my side I guess. But others weren’t so lucky.

Its really hard for me to watch videos like this, i can see the fear on all of their faces, when i was young these soldiers looked like tough fearless men. But now I'm only twenty and i can see that these are just children who are lost and scared. My heart goes out to those who were and still are being affected by war, theres things in this world a person just shouldnt have to see or do, thank you all for making that sacrifice.

My best HS friend died in Vietnam. He was 19 yrs old. Never got a chance to really live Life. I think of him often. We played on the same HS football team together. He had a smile that could cover a whole ocean. Still think about my man Mace everyday.

That’s what I’d think too, but I think
once you’ve done it enough times, the thought of getting shot or injured doesn’t hit you untill later on. Plus I’m sure the adrenaline levels are really high during combat, so the medics don’t have time to think about getting killed, they have to focus on reaching the wounded, and avoiding getting shot. No time to think about anything else.

My dad was going to be an English major before he got drafted. Forever a Jarhead, he relived traumas everyday but would rarely share his accounts with me. He passed away from cancer in 2013. I’ve felt lost without him ever since. Because of him, I will never be fooled by the false necessity of war.

He was so young when he saw what he saw and did what he did.

@MrHocotateFreight i am sure that is the case but using that shot of him looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights along with that narrative, ESPECIALLY in comparison to the heroic warrior like demeanors of the other guys, is both sensational and unnecessary.

Fear is a presupposition. My Pop was a medic with the 82nd and I only heard stories second hand about the nightmares he had picking up body parts and running out of morphine. His five brothers never stopped talking about the war. They lived for their tank, flight and Seabee stories. But Pop never said a word.

So i particularly empathize with this kid

God bless these men. My Grandfather was in WWII and Korea before being told he was going to Vietnam. He told them it was time for him to leave the Army. He had had enough of war. My Dad missed being drafted by 1 number. I get sick when I think of how these men were treated after the war. It is a shame that we could not stay as united and Patriotic as we were after 9/11. That was the first time in my lifetime that it felt like America moved and thought as one united front. Imagine what the greatest country on earth could do if we kept that unity.

Features and documentaries were just so much more informative back in the days. Less artificial dramatization (because reality is usually interesting enough!), less hectic camera movement - just putting the subject in the focus and let everything speak for itself. So much nicer to watch.

Those guys were the real war dogs of life. Vietnam was known as a brutal war because it was in the jungle. In a foreign country we're the enemy already lives in the jungle knowing the terrain is what's so scary. Not to mention all the different malaria bugs and critters snakes and spiders that were a lethal threat to infantry.

@Skkka the usage of drugs in Vietnam is greatly over exaggerated. There was a time around 68-72 where the usage was big but after that it really wasn’t that common to see some dude downing acid like it’s a mento. My dad my older uncle who were in the army during Vietnam and my younger uncle who was a marine in Vietnam says that’s one of the things they always over exaggerate in movies is the drug usage.

I’m an a Vietnam veteran, in country 1971. I was wounded at the Chu Chi tunnels. A medic saved my life, under similar conditions, seen in the video. As a result, I’m 100% P&T. We never should have been there!
