God
SFA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One day you'll all die
All your lives were just a lie
No escaping death, you can't run away
Lie to yourselves and blindly pray
Try to hide, you just won't see
There is no God, there's only me

Fuck your religion
I'll burn your churches down
I spit on your priests
And piss on your sacred ground
You're so fucking brainwashed
You just can't see
If you need something to believe in

You can worship me
I am my own God

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Super Furry Animals' song "God" are a pointed critique of organized religion and the concept of God. The opening lines, "One day you'll all die / All your lives were just a lie / No escaping death, you can't run away / Lie to yourselves and blindly pray" set a bleak and confrontational tone. The song then takes aim at religion more directly, with lines like "Fuck your religion / I'll burn your churches down" and "I spit on your priests / And piss on your sacred ground." The chorus of "There is no God, there's only me / I am my own God" drives home the message that individuals must take responsibility for their own lives and actions, rather than relying on a higher power to dictate right and wrong.

Through its lyrics, "God" is a call for individualism, scientific and philosophical inquiry, and an end to the influence of organized religion on human society. The song's message is controversial and provocative, but it also encourages listeners to think for themselves and challenge accepted beliefs and practices. The fact that Super Furry Animals chose to release this song as a single, complete with a music video featuring a dancing bear in a church, demonstrates their willingness to court controversy and challenge powerful institutions.

I fell like a lot of people don't realize the brilliance of this band. Many just catch a few funny songs. Most don't realize to the band being amazing and Gruffa great unique lyrics (and they get more impressive the more you listen to them).

@J69er

Very underrated band !

@jools182

@Amethyst_Friend

@@kingsnivy No it is not, sorry. Use of electronics does not equate to techno

@markmoore2625

Gotta love this band. Fuzzy logic's in my top 5 90's albums and are a spellbinding act live.

@madforit2

I know very little about the band apart from a handful of songs. I saw them play live in 2000 at a festival in Ireland having only heard 2 songs prior and was blown away. Unbelievable live

@carlpott2961

They never got better than the 1st half of the first album, but that was enough. Plus this vid is all kinds of brilliance.
