The sisters are classically-trained musicians. Emerging from the artist colony of Fort Collins on the Eastern slope of Colorado, SHEL is sophisticated and youthful, emotional and lighthearted, classic and eccentric. SHEL's engaging live show is marked with a prodigy's creativity and a veteran's instinct for entertaining. At every performance, SHEL delights audiences with their unique songwriting style and fresh, new sound.
"SHEL has delivered one of the most impressive debuts of the year..." Chris Douridas, KCRW, Los Angeles
"These girls are sooooo amazing... the Sky's the Limit!" Chris Conn, Conman Radio/Dial Global
"SHEL performs with the precision of a heat seeking missile." Paul Kennerley, Award-winning Songwriter
Sarah, 19 (Violin, Bass) - Immensely gifted as a violinist and vocalist, Sarah also shines with her bass chops. Highly creative, Sarah's diverse artistic talents have lead her to be the primary designer of SHEL's original graphics and videography. She is also the undisputed ambassador of fun at every show.
Hannah, 22 (Piano, Keyboards) An award-winning young composer and pianist, Hannah also sings and helps arrange SHEL's unique vocal harmonies. Hannah has been studying at Colorado State University for the past three years where she's concentrated on piano performance and composition.
Eva, 20 (Mandolin, Electric Mandolin, Cello) Lead vocalist and one of the band's primary writers, Eva's passion and talent for playing both acoustic and electric mandolin has received widespread recognition. Involved in every phase of arranging and production, Eva records much of the band's tracks in their home studio.
Liza, 16 (Drums, Percussion) - Liza's natural polyrhythmic ability was spotted at an early age. Not only is she the drummer for the band, Liza is equally proficient on the Djembe and Roland Hand Sonic drum. Her creative approach to percussion enables her to create the unique rhythm patterns that help define SHEL's music.
The group glides effortlessly atop the lilting, sublime voices of the Holbrook sisters, Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza. But Shel's appeal goes way beyond the vocals. These gals are exceptional musicians as well, with each member playing an array of instruments including violin, electric bass, piano, mandolin to drums. The sisters, which got their start backing their singer-songwriter dad Andrew, have already attracted the attention of soundtrack supervisor extraordinaire, Chris Douridas from KCRW, who listed their six-song EP, Try To Scream, as "one of the most impressive debuts of the year." Couldn't agree more.

Alot or most people misunderstand shell shock but the cause is in the name "SHELL SHOCK". The soldiers going into WWI went in with swords, single shot weapon that 2 soldiers shared, and horses all expecting to be home in a couple of weeks. They new nothing of the actual death and distraction they were walking into but what was the cause of shell shock is the bombs exploding. Shell shock is actual tiny nerve damage that happens when an explosive goes off too close to your head. The shock and vibration tears hundreds of little nerves in the brain and the soldier literally goes from ok to histercal to unable to control the own body. The government's didn't understand this then and many doctors tried many experiments. Also theses soldiers were called liars and put in jail or even sent back to the front believing that once the soldier knew he is like wasn't working then he'd snap out of it. U fortunately they were killed quickly either by the enemy, allies, or self inflicted. But there was ONE Dr that figured it out and his treatment was 98% more effective than ALL the others combined. This Dr got an entire floor of a hospital or building and blacked out the windows and trained all the nurses to work in near silent conditions and to talk at no more than a whisper their whole shift daily. Every soldier was given very strong sleeping medication, put into a comfortable bed, snuggled in, no lights, and no sounds. They were awoken every 6 hours to eat, use the restroom, bath, and re medicated back to sleep for another 6 hours. Each patient was given the dosage that he needed and personal care. They continued this routine every six hours until the patients brain healed. The sleeping, dark, silent was literally wound care. So if you have surgery they say it will take six weeks for the site to heal all the way from inside to outside completely. Well this is exactly what the Dr was doing to these shell shock victims. Dr was caring for the patient and his wound being the ripped nerves from the explosions shocking their brain and the vibration tearing the nerves. So it took about six weeks for each patients brain to heal. The sleep dark silent was done because they didn't want to stimulate the brain at all. They wanted it to do nothing but heal. And this treatment worked!

You seem to be quite capable, but how it is that you can take the chosen phrase from, roughly, 1916 – ‘Shell Shock’ -- and literalize it, is beyond me. Those in charge were just trying to control a near uncontrollable problem. Only tangentially could such be blamed on tearing of nerve fibers in the brain because of 'explosions,' or 'concussions,' etc. What about – simply -- the experience of war, or, life itself? This came -- finally! -- in the 1980s, with the generation of the phrase, PTSD, ‘Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,’ that buried the ignorant causation once called, 'Shell Shock.' PTSD can occur through all varieties of trauma, from war, to violence, to car crashes, to child birth, etc. Trying to find a workable term has been a long time coming. In the U.S. Civil War, it was called, 'Pixies,' and a character in Laurence Sterne's The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, (1759-67) displays the effects of war (early 1700’s) on Uncle Toby, who could barely function at all. Let’s go back even further, to Homer’s The Illiad. Achilles is popularly known to have an, ‘Achilles’ heel,’ a place of, otherwise, weakness & vulnerability. No ‘Shell Shock’ on any of these characters or times.

My grandfather knew my Great Great Great Great Grampa Robert, who was a Union soldier and fought in the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Papa Robert had a friend who also was a Union soldier who also fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. He said Papa Robert went to an event for Civil War veterans. Papa Robert's friend had SEVERE shell shock (PTSD) and was TERRIFIED of the other veterans giving twenty-one gun salutes with their muskets. He started crying from terror when shown a picture of the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg and his old kepi. He left when someone fired an old cannon.

War should be banned by all countries. To have war or violence in one's memory bank is abhorrent and horrific. I've known a number of WWII vets who never want to bring up the subject.
