Compared to BLANKEY JET CITY’s often aggressive rock sound, SHERBETS musical approach is generally of much calmer nature. While their music is centered around Asai’s guitar and voice, Fucci’s keyboard and backing vocals are just as integral to the band’s distinctive sound. Asai writes all of the band’s lyrics, and often portrays dreamy landscapes akin to the ones displayed by his many paintings and illustrations.
In May 2011, it was announced that the band would cease activities after the release of one final album – titled "FREE" – in July of the same year. In the announcement, Asai stated that it was dubious that the four members would perform together in the future. A few days later, another announcement made it clear that the band members had changed their minds, and decided not to disband after all. An interview later revealed that there had been tension within the band related to Asai's decision to focus on his garage rock project PONTIACS.

The song "High School" by Japanese band Sherbets reflects on the common experience of attending high school and the dreams and aspirations that come with it. The lyrics are filled with references to popular culture and media, reflecting the nostalgic memories of the era in which the song was written. The first verse speaks to a conversation between a teacher and a student about their dreams, with various cultural references like Faye Dunaway and Vietnam Boy. The second verse lists more references like Mary Poppins and Skunky, but ultimately the lyrics return to the dream of driving a hot rod to meet someone.
Overall, the song seems to capture the feeling of being young and having limitless dreams and possibilities ahead. The references to popular culture serve as a reminder of the time period in which the song was written, adding to its nostalgic and reflective tone. The dream of driving a hot rod to meet someone also feels emblematic of the freedom and opportunity that youth represents, as well as the desire to live life on one's own terms.
