Reality Is a Ride on the Bus
SNFU Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My face is buried inside a book

Everybody's wearing a haggard look

The sirens scream, a baby cries

Everyday on this bus I ride
There's a man to my left

Who's got a stump for a hand

I'm staring into a giant cyst

Growing on the face of a Chinese man

Reality is a ride on the bus

The mongoloid is in the back

He's having his snot for lunch

There's a loud mouth sitting next to me

The one that everybody wants to punch

Reality is a ride on the bus

So hop on board and step inside

This sardine can on wheels we'll ride

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of SNFU's song "Reality Is A Ride On The Bus" are a vivid description of the experiences of a person riding on a bus in a city. The singer is engrossed in their book, while the other people on the bus wear weary expressions. The sound of sirens and a crying baby are ever-present. The man sitting to the left of the singer has a stump for a hand, and they stare at a Chinese man who has a giant cyst on their face. In the back of the bus is someone with Down syndrome who is eating their snot. Finally, the singer is sitting next to someone so obnoxious that everyone on the bus wants to hit them. The song's refrain "Reality is a ride on the bus" captures the mundanity of life, which is brought into stark focus when one is trapped on a cramped, noisy bus with a collection of strangers.

The song is an exploration of life's gritty, unvarnished aspects. The singer is unable to tune out of their surroundings and loses themselves in their book, perhaps as a form of escapism. The song reminds the listener that the world isn't always glamorous, and there are moments when one is exposed to things that are unpleasant or uncomfortable. The title is apt because the bus ride is a metaphor for life. We are all on this ride together, but while some of us can choose to look away, others are forced to bear witness to the grinding, unsanitized reality of everyday existence.

I was 6,7,8 years old listening to this on a mixtape, ever day on my bus ride to school. Back then I misheard the lyrics as "...a bomb on the bus." I still have my box of mixtapes; some were lost and damn near all the track list sleeves were lost wayyy back. Almost 30 years later, I finally tracked down bands like SNFU and Greta (listened to School On Fire every day too! XD) as the internet has caught up to the most obscure lyrics I've been searching over and over. So glad I was raised on kick ass, REAL music like this!

SNFU still rule. I say bring them back, the last album was up there with the best, they shouldn't have stopped.
