Signal
SOHN Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Signal
Wave across the water for me
Let me know
That you'll be waiting ever for me
Oh, I've been travelling
Waiting for a moment of peace
These stormy weathers
Got me thinking of how I want it to be

(Be, be, wanted to, wanted to be)
(Be, wanted to be)

Signal
Light a thousand fires on me
Give me no doubt
That I'm the one that never has to leave
Oh, I've been divided
Time and time again you keep the peace
Give me shelter
Let me be the man I wanted to be

(Be, be, wanted to, wanted to be)
(Be, wanted to be)
(Be, be, wanted to, wanted to be)
(Be, wanted to, wanted to be)
(Be, wanted to, wanted to be)
(Be, wanted to be)
(Be, wanted to, wanted to be)
(Be, wanted to, wanted to be)

(Be, wanted to, wanted to be)
(Be)

Overall Meaning

The song "Signal" by SOHN is a powerful reflection on the journey towards finding peace and stability in life. The lyrics speak to the singer's longing for a sign, a "signal", from someone or something that will guide him towards a moment of tranquility. The opening lines, "Wave across the water for me, let me know that you'll be waiting ever for me", indicate the desperation of the singer for a connection with someone or something that will give him a sense of purpose and direction.

The lyrics also touch on themes of division and uncertainty, with the line "Oh, I've been divided, time and time again you keep the peace" emphasising the sense of dislocation and fragmentation that the singer has experienced. However, despite the chaos and stormy weather that the singer has experienced, the song ultimately remains hopeful, with the repeated phrase "Let me be the man I wanted to be" suggesting a desire for personal growth and self-realisation.

Overall, "Signal" is a powerful and deeply introspective song that speaks to the human need for connection and meaning in life. Its introspective lyrics and intense emotions make it a deeply moving and engaging piece of music.

Statement of Mila about her directorial debut with SOHN: "I literally had his album on repeat for weeks and soon found that I felt an incredibly visual connection to his music. As the music played, I kept seeing images in my head and it was really the first time that I felt the itch to direct. […] Once I started thinking about how to bring the original concept to life, I became obsessed with bringing projections into the mix. I felt like we could bring the viewer into the mind of the character I was portraying through the different projections, both behind me and on my body, that would be both emotional and visually exciting. What happened on the day was absolute magic; one of the takes was so powerful and really told the story so well that SOHN knew we had the video for his song right then, on the day, totally live. This was something he had wanted right from our first conversations, to make the video completely analog and real and to somehow be able to shoot everything in one take. It is a testament to the focus and skill of our amazing DP Vern Nobles and his crew that we were able to capture the soul of the song in such a seemingly effortless way; no cuts, no tricks."

So she’s pretty, talented, AND has good taste in music? That doesn’t seem fair…

@PluckySmurf

The way we feel, versus the way we convey our emotions. What we project, versus what is "acceptable". I so identify with this hollow.

I love how this song builds and peaks right at the end. beautiful

@musicbytonya

I really enjoyed the video. It was like a light from an old reel-to-reel was shining on you revealing your feeling on the inside. Outside, trying to hold it together but inside, all over the place with your feelings. Very powerful. Keep it up!!!

I was really craving for some new SOHN material, as always never disappoints

@NexusReplicant7

Watching the emotional depths she reaches in this video is incredible. Would expect nothing less from a Sohn video.

My interpretation of the video and song:
The song depicts the struggle we go through when wearing masks - being a different version of ourselves to different people in different situations.
Moments of shock and awe is an external reaction to things that happened/are about to happen around us in our lives with each mask we wear, in each situation we endure. Residing internally is our true selves and our raw primal emotions. The way the pain and fears in life truly affect us inside, and our struggle to keep it in. The way we want to feel and react at that moment.
The side that we know everyone has, but no one wants to reveal. We've been taught to keep our emotions inside and suppress them as a means to keep us safe and to protect us from harm and manipulation, but the price that we pay for that protection is a lot higher than we realize.

That is just my POV on it. Nothing is absolute.
