Home for a Rest
SOTW Lyrics

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left
These so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink I need home for a rest.

We arrived in December and London was cold
We stayed in the bars along Charing Cross Road
We never saw nothin' but brass taps and oak
Kept a shine on the bar with the sleeves of our coats

CHORUS:
You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a week
I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations
Will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink
I need home for a rest
Take me home...

Euston Station the train journey North
In the buffet car we lurched back and forth
Past old crooked dykes through Yorkshire's green fields
We were flung into dance as the train jigged and reeled

- CHORUS -

By the light of the moon, she'd drift through the streets
A rare old perfume, so seductive and sweet
She'd tease us and flirt, as the pubs all closed down
Then walk us on home and deny us a round

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month
I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations
Will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink
I need home for a rest
Take me home...

The gas heater's empty, it's damp as a tomb
The spirits we drank now ghosts in the room
I'm knackered again, come on sleep take me soon
And don't lift up my head 'till the the twelve bells at noon

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month
I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations
Will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink

I need home for a rest
Take me home...

Overall Meaning

The song "Home for a Rest" by Spirit of the West is a tale of a group of rowdy friends on a drinking binge in London. The lyrics are sung from the perspective of a protagonist who is sick and tired of his drunken escapades and just wants to go home. He acknowledges the damage that prolonged drinking has done to his health and life, with the song's repeated refrain "I'm so sick from the drink I need home for a rest."

The song vividly describes the group's adventures in London, from drinking in bars on Charing Cross Road to the train journey North and the moonlit walks home with a seductive woman. The group's drinking binge is so prolonged that by the time they return home, the gas heater has run out of gas and they are left to face the consequences of their actions in silence.

The song's lyrics are not only relatable to anyone who has ever had a wild night out but also masterfully convey a sense of longing for home and the need to escape the vicious cycle of drinking. The catchy melody and upbeat tempo of the song make it a beloved classic in Canadian music history.

I was at a music festival up on Haida Gwaii 20 plus years ago.
Spirit of the West was the headliner.
Outside concert at night.
The concert started and John walked up to the mic and said "We flew 500 miles to be here tonight, you guys can come up a bit closer to the stage."
The whole crowd surged forward.

What a great concert it was.
The local hippies were set up beside the stage keeping time on the drums, at one time there was a bit of a duel going on between the band and the hippies
People were dancing everywhere.
The grass in front of the stage turned into a mud pit but the people just kept going.

It was a hell of a night.
Thank you SOTW and thank you especially to John.
Rest in peace. Your home now.
