After becoming instant Top 40 material with their driving hit Right Now and the lesser-known Politically Correct on their first album, the band slowly shied from the limelight for its second album, part of the reason the third album was not released in the US.
In recent days lead singer Mitch Allan has pursued a solo career, reworking some SR-71 songs and creating some of his own. SR-71 split in 2007, but reformed in 2009.
The name of the band came from SR-71 Blackbird, a retired supersonic surveillance aircraft of the United States Air Force.

In My Mind
SR-71 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Watching you drive by
Not letting you drive away
Can you see me trying to wave you down tonight
'Cause I need to see you one more time
You'll always be there in my mind
In my dreams you can hide
They're in my mind
An angel bathed in light
Telling me everything's gonna be alright...
If I can fall asleep tonight
Lonely is the feeling I can't comprehend
So I'm skipping the last page to see how this will end
Have you ever felt so helpless
When the walls built to protect us
Suddenly are gone
And you hate everything that's breathing
The life you're used to cheating
Has finally caught on
The lyrics to SR-71's "In My Mind" express the desire to hold onto a moment and not let it slip away. The lyrics open with a plea to make this moment last forever, indicating that the moment being referred to is a fleeting one. The singer is watching someone drive by, but they're not ready to let that person go just yet. The singer is trying to wave the person down and bring them back, perhaps because they're afraid they'll never see them again.
As the lyrics progress, the singer talks about how this person will always be in their mind and dreams, indicating that they're deeply attached to this person. The imagery of an angel bathed in light conveys a sense of comfort and hope. The singer seems to be asking this angel for reassurance that everything will be alright, implying that they're going through a difficult time.
The later verses talk about feeling lonely and helpless, and the walls that are meant to protect us suddenly disappearing. The singer hates everything that's breathing and feels like the life they've been leading has finally caught up with them. The lyrics are deeply emotional and express a sense of vulnerability that many people can relate to.
