In a Breakfast Club interview, SZA explains that the song ties in to the character, Gina (portrayed by Tisha Campbell-Martin) from the 1992 sitcom Martin. SZA believes that if the character Gina didn’t work so much and just had a good time like her friends, then she would have a more fun and enjoyable life.
“Go Gina” is used two different ways in this song. The most important line in the first verse is the last line….“you bring me out of character everytime again..” She is referencing whoever it is that has been talking about her or saying things about her that are not true. “Damn Gina” was also used on Martin in a negative way. When she would make Martin mad or mess something up, Martin would say….“Daaaaammmmnnn Ginnnnaaa” as if to say, here you go again. Now look back at the first verse and you get the sense that she is saying “Damn Gina” like here you go again with your stuck up self, talking about me when I’m doing me and living my life.“ “Them jeans must be uptight” simply references how stuck up the person is and “get right” means they need to relax and go until they actually GET RIGHT, with themselves and learn how to live a little.
The second verse is SZA explaining that she is free to do whatever she wants. Perhaps, she used to be like Gina, uptight and now she is doing her. This is where “go gina” is used in the positive, like a praise, a compliment, the way Martin used to say….“you go girl!”

Hey, I lost you, babe
Picking up a penny with a press-on is
Easier than holding you down
Can't be any harder than holding you up now
To come clean I said
To be real is to be real is
Probably true what they say about me
Probably came from my inner circle
It usually come from your inner circle
Or lack thereof and I don't know who I can trust
I've been dropping out and
I've been hanging out with my high friends
And we too stoned to pay attention
Much too cool for 7th grade
I mean, really it's same me, it's old me
You know? Same shit
I've been on the low key
Grinding (grinding, grinding)
Learning on the low key, shining
Tryin' to keep to myself
But you bring me out of character
Every time again
Damn Gina, damn Gina
Them jeans, they must be uptight mama
You need some get right mama
Go Gina, go Gina
Go get that get right mama
Go Gina, go Gina
Go till you get right, mama
I belong to nobody
Hope it don't bother you
You can mind your business
I belong to nobody
Try not to disturb
And mind my business
It works for me, it works for me, no
Go Gina, go Gina, aye
It works for me, it works for me, no
Go Gina, go Gina, aye
It works for me, it works for me, no
Go Gina, go Gina, aye
It works for me, it works for me, no
Go Gina, go Gina, aye
In SZA's song Go Gina, the artist sings about her past experiences with failed relationships and the struggle to trust others. She starts the song by addressing someone she might have lost due to her own indulgences and admitting that holding onto that person would have been harder than picking up a penny with a press-on. SZA then delves into the feeling of being misunderstood and the judgments that come from people who think they know her but only know what they have heard from others. She acknowledges that sometimes, these judgments come from her inner circle or the lack thereof, making it hard for her to trust even those closest to her. Having dropped out of school and spent time with her stoner friends, SZA finds herself too cool for seventh grade, hinting at a sense of superiority she feels due to her experiences.
The chorus of the song celebrates Gina, a strong, independent woman who doesn't need anyone to define her. SZA sings "Go Gina, go Gina, aye, go get that get right mama, go Gina, go Gina, go till you get right, mama," encouraging Gina to keep hustling and being unapologetic about the way she lives her life. SZA relates to Gina's approach and acknowledges that she belongs to nobody and hopes that it won't bother others. She prefers to mind her own business and not disturb others as it works better for her.
Overall, SZA's Go Gina is a song about independence, self-love, and the freedom to live life on one's own terms. The track is a relatable anthem for anyone who has ever felt the pressure to conform or struggled with trust issues.
