Devil's Dance
S & M Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Her breath began to speak
As she stood right in front of me
The color of her eyes
Were the color of insanity
Crushed beneath her wave
Like a ship, I could not reach her shore
We're all just dancers on the Devil's Dance Floor
Well swing a little more, little more o'er the merry-o
Swing a little more, a little more next to me
Swing a little more, little more o'er the merry-o
Swing a little more, on the Devil's Dance Floor

Pressed against her face
I could feel her insecurity
Her mother'd been a drunk
And her father was obscurity
But nothin' ever came
From a life that was a simple one
So pull yourself together girl
And have a little fun

Well she took me by the hand
I could see she was a fiery one
Her legs ran all the way
Up to heaven and past Avalon
Tell me somethin' girl, what it is you have in store
She said come with me now
On the Devil's Dance Floor

Well swing a little more, little more o'er the merry-o
Swing a little more, a little more next to me
Swing a little more, little more o'er the merry-o
Swing a little more, on the Devil's Dance Floor

The apple now is sweet
Oh much sweeter than it ought to be
Another little bite
I don't think there is much hope for me
The sweat beneath her brow
Travels all the way
An' headin' south
This bleedin' heart's cryin'
Cause there's no way out

Well swing a little more, little more o'er the merry-o
Swing a little more, a little more next to me

Swing a little more, little more o'er the merry-o
Swing a little more, on the Devil's Dance Floor

Overall Meaning

In S&M's "Devil's Dance," the singer meets a woman with wild eyes and a tumultuous past. He feels drawn to her, but can't quite connect with her. She's like a ship out at sea, unmoored and unreachable. Together, they dance on the Devil's Dance Floor - a metaphor for the seductive trap of temptation and sin. Life is fleeting and fragile, and all we can do is dance and enjoy the moment we have.

The woman is plagued by insecurity, stemming from a troubled family life. She offers the singer a taste of the forbidden - "the apple now is sweet, oh much sweeter than it ought to be" - but warns that there's no way out. He's trapped in the cycle of sin and pleasure, with no escape in sight.

Through it all, the music never stops. The "merry-o" refrain encourages the dancers to keep swinging and enjoy the ride, even if they know it's leading them down a dangerous path. The song is a powerful reminder of the seductive power of temptation, the fleeting nature of pleasure, and the importance of living in the present moment.

You know you’re doing something right when a song like this is considered one of your lesser known and under appreciated tracks…

When I was 17, my parents sent me to a pentacostal christian school in a whole nother country. The teacher that was supposed to be my leading teacher took me in a small room, and told me that the devil was talking through my music. She took my collection of Metallica, Red hot chili peppers and System of a down collection and threw it all away.. within that collection was my Metallica S&M CD/DVD collection.. Could never find the same collection again

@matto5547

Basically criminal behavior. I’m sorry you went through that.
