The Fear Within
Sacrilege Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Thought, closes his mind, fear down deep within
Cold, hands of terror, time, now it begins
Tearing inside, as alive, but entombed

Hands, grasping his throat, choking, starting to drown
Screams, no-one can hear, reality, he's all alone

Tearing inside, as alive, but entombed

Breaking free from the grip, fear, annulled by the light
Usurper, now is denied, his eyes, it is only a respite

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sacrilege's song, The Fear Within, describe the experience of a person who is experiencing intense fear and panic. The song begins by painting a vivid picture of what it feels like to be trapped within oneself, with thoughts that close the mind and a deep and all-consuming fear. The stanza goes on to describe the physical manifestations of this fear, with cold hands of terror taking hold and time seeming to stretch out before them.

The second verse brings the listener into the heart of the experience, as the singer feels as if they are tearing apart from within, alive but entombed. The physicality of their terror becomes overwhelming as hands seem to grasp their throat and they feel as if they are drowning. The sense of isolation and abandonment is palpable as they scream out, but no one can hear them.

The final lines of the song bring some sense of relief, as the singer is able to break free and find some solace in the light. However, the sense of fear and the struggle against it is ongoing, as the fear is only temporarily annulled.
