Bring Me Home
Sade (Soldier of love - 2010) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The ground is full of broken stones
The last leaf has fallen
I have nowhere to turn now
Nor east nor west
North or south
And all that's ahead of me
And everything I know
I know nothing so
So bring me home

Put me on a plate with petals and a fire
And send me out to sea
Turn my angry sword against my heart
And let me free

The dawn holds the heaviness of the night
I've heard the restless sighs and lovers lies
The brook, the beach and seen the devil's eyes
So bring me home

I've cried for the lives I've lost
Like a child in need of love
I've been so close but far away from god
My tears flow like a child's in need of love
I've cried the tears
So let the tide take me
I won't fight
I've cried the tears

The small step I need to take is a mountain
Stretched out like a lazy dog
Send me to slaughter
Lay me on the railway line
I'm far away from god
My tears flow like a child's in need of love
I've cried the tears

So build the fire and light the flame
Bring me home

Overall Meaning

In “Bring Me Home,” Sade uses a mix of vivid imagery and emotional lyrics to express her desire for being at peace. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song. She’s on the ground that's full of broken stones, and the last leaf has fallen, which feels like it serves as a metaphor for her life. She then sings about having nowhere to turn, no matter which direction she looks or goes. She’s banging her head against a wall, trying to figure everything out, but all she knows is nothing. She’s lost and exhausted.

The second verse is much more vivid and somewhat disturbing. She sings about wanting to be put on a plate with petals and a fire and sent out to sea. The delicate parts being paired with the fierce nature of fire and sea bring a sense of calamity. She goes on to almost plead to have her sword turned against her heart, as if she was ready to let go of all the pain she has to endure.

The final verse is the most emotional part of the song, as she cries out for help, acknowledging her tears have a child's desperate need for love, and that the thought of suicide or self-destruction seems less distant than ever. Ultimately, it’s a plea to be brought home, to herself, where she can finally have peace.

This is also my go-to song when I hit my lowest and darkest days.

My sweet Sade, you are by far my favorite therapist, my shoulder when I need a good cry,
my best friend when I need someone to understand me when nobody can.
And I think that you even are my father's first love... (sorry mama)

This isn’t one of her most famous song but it is one of her saddest one for sure.

And I will even say this, one of the saddest songs ever written...

''I have cried for the lives I've lost, like a child in need of love'' ; those words will always resonate like a knife going straight through my heart each time I m listening to them..

No child should be brought into this world without the total willingness of her mother.

Abortion has to be a worldwide women's right in addition to being a matter of health care. Because not only the mother will suffer but the child would probably have more chance to suffer too..

Thank you, my sweet Helen, for all the support that no friends or family could ever give me.

You number one fan (after my father of course lol)

I love you,

Ava

When this song came out. I was hospitalized for a month thinking I was dying. I played this on repeat every day. Although the lyrics seem as though she was giving up, it gave me strength. Thank you Sade for being the strength I needed at my lowest point as only you can❤

A loss of a child (not my own by blood but still)brought me here... As a mother a loss of any child can really break you and leave you in despair.... This song summed up all emotions and really consoled me.... Thank God for music like this, her voice just hits where it hurts and for a few minutes there's a peace that can not be described.. RIP little one

She's Amazing! When I found out about my breast cancer the song Long Hard Road is the first song I listened to when I got in my car after my diagnosis, I drove and cried and listen to her sing me that song over and over again!! 10 years later I'm alive and chill singing her songs as always and always will. ❤❤ Thanks for saving me with that so soothing voice of yours Sade!! ❤ ❤
