1) Safire, born Wilma Cosme in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a New York City freestyle singer-songwriter who has been one of the Freestyle genre's most popular female performers. She started her singing career as a session vocalist. An audition for the Cutting Records label broke her into the mainstream. She had successful run of classic 80s pop singles such as "Don't Break My Heart", "Let Me Be the One", "Boy I've Been Told", and "Thinking of You". After her sophomore album "I Wasn't Born Yesterday", her career stalled a bit over the 90s as other genres eclipsed freestyle, but she has continued to tour to a base of loyal fans. She released her third album, "Atrevida", a Salsa album in 1996. Safire's fourth album "Bringing Back the Groove" released in 2001 brought her back to the charts with the hits "Don't Break My Heart 2002" and a Freestyle rendition of the New Edition hit "Can You Stand The Rain. Her most recent single is the hit Dance song, "Exotique." Visit http://www.myspace.com/safiresofficialpage Safire's official MySpace.

I Will Survive
Safire Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never
Live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights
Thinkin how you did me wrong
And I grew strong and
And so you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
With that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I'd have known for just one second
You'd be back to bother me
Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried
To hurt me with goodbye
Did you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love
I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
And I'll survive, I will survive
Hey hey
It took all the strength
I had not to fall apart
Kept trying hard to mend
The pieces of my broken heart
And I spent, oh, so many nights
Just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry but now
I hold my head up high
And you see me, somebody new
I'm not that chained up
Little person still in love with you
And so you felt like dropping in
And just expect me to be free
Now I'm saving all my loving
For someone who's loving me
Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried
To break me with goodbye
Did you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love
I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
And I'll survive, I will survive
Oh, now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried
To break me with goodbye
Did you think I'd crumble
You think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love
I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
And I'll survive, I will survive
I will survive
Safire's version of "I Will Survive" is a powerful anthem about the resilience of the human spirit. The song opens with the singer expressing fear and desperation after a break-up, feeling as though they cannot live without their partner. However, as time passes, the singer gains strength and learns to thrive on their own. When their ex-partner returns, the singer is no longer dependent on them and confidently tells them to leave. The song emphasizes the importance of self-love and independence, and the power that comes with learning to rely on oneself.
Line by Line Meaning
At first I was afraid
I was scared and nervous
I was petrified
I was extremely frightened
Kept thinking I could never
I believed that it was impossible
Live without you by my side
To exist in this world without you
But then I spent so many nights
I spent numerous nights
Thinkin how you did me wrong
Reflecting on the ways you mistreated me
And I grew strong and
I became tougher and more resilient, and
I learned how to get along
I discovered how to cope with life alone
And so you're back from outer space
Now you've returned from being away
I just walked in to find you here
Upon entering, I discovered you present
With that sad look upon your face
Due to the expression on your face that is melancholic
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have replaced the lock which was not wise
I should have made you leave your key
I ought to have ensured that you surrendered your key
If I'd have known for just one second
Even if I had been informed for a moment
You'd be back to bother me
That you would return to trouble me
Go on now, go, walk out the door
You are now free to leave and should exit through the door
Just turn around now
Simply face the other direction now
Cause you're not welcome anymore
You are no longer invited to return
Weren't you the one who tried
Weren't you the person who attempted
To hurt me with goodbye
To inflict pain by leaving
Did you think I'd crumble
Did you expect me to break down
Did you think I'd lay down and die
Did you think I would give up and die
Oh no, not I, I will survive
No, I refuse to succumb; I will endure
Oh, as long as I know how to love
As long as I am aware of how to express love
I know I'll stay alive
I am aware that I will continue to exist
I've got all my life to live
I have my entire life ahead of me
I've got all my love to give
I have a lot of love left to offer
And I'll survive, I will survive
And I will prevail, I will persevere
Hey hey
Hey hey
It took all the strength
It required all the power
I had not to fall apart
I possessed not to come apart
Kept trying hard to mend
I attempted rigorously to fix
The pieces of my broken heart
The parts of my shattered heart
And I spent, oh, so many nights
I spent countless nights
Just feeling sorry for myself
Just pitying myself
I used to cry but now
I used to weep, but now
I hold my head up high
I am proud and confident
And you see me, somebody new
You perceive me as someone different
I'm not that chained up
I am no longer enslaved
Little person still in love with you
Person who is still in love with you
And so you felt like dropping in
And so you had the urge to visit
And just expect me to be free
And anticipated that I would be unoccupied
Now I'm saving all my loving
Now I am reserving all my affection
For someone who's loving me
For a person who is fond of me
