Avalon
Saga Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A tree in a stream floating upside down
A boat with a hole spinning round and round
There's a bird on a string staring up at the clouds
And a rat with a snake heading underground

Standing on top of the Avebury Hill
A circle appears, the pathway is still
The egg stone is waiting there right at the top
Can you see a maze that time has forgot?

Standing on Avalon
My thoughts are in the way
Yesterday, so far away
The hills of Avalon

Deep in the waves where the ocean hides
There's a reflection from an auburn sky
The rainbows unfold with the light of the sun
The vision, serenity, has just begun

I rest in the shadows where the air is clear
I hear of a silence that's drawing near
I search the horizon that lives in a dream
An innocent world awaits for me

Am I there? No, maybe not
I'm sure there's a way but I could be wrong

There's a road to travel on
Way up in the hills of Avalon

Overall Meaning

In Saga's song Avalon, the lyrics portray a dream-like and surreal world where everything is upside down and topsy-turvy. A tree is floating upside down in a stream, a boat is spinning with a hole, and a bird is staring up at the clouds while hanging on a string. There is a mysterious maze at the top of Avebury Hill, and an egg stone lies there waiting to be discovered. The lyrics ask the listener to imagine a world that time has forgotten and to stand firmly atop the hills of Avalon.

The lyrics then move on to describing the ocean's depth and the hidden beauty within it. There is a reflection of the auburn sky and a display of a rainbow with the light of the sun shining through. The environment is serene and peaceful. The lyrics also describe a silence that approaches, and a horizon that exists only in a dream. The song promises an innocent world that is waiting to be explored but cautions that the path is uncertain and there may be twists and turns along the way.

Overall, Saga's song Avalon is a surreal and interpretive landscape that invites the listener to explore the mysteries and wonders of the world with an open imagination.

Got this album when it first came out and was instantly impressed. A few years later and it holds up well. The writing/recording combination of Saga with Rob Moratti resulted in something unique and highly listenable. Too bad Rob didn't stick around long enough to give us a second album. "Human Condition" is great from start to finish, no filler.

Great melodies in this track, the solos are top-notch, and .... oh yeah ... the 'replacement' does just fine singing his heart out--my friend, Moratti.

Moratti has a big pair of shoes to fill and does a great job in his own unique way. This new Saga music, including Moratti's vocals, reminds me of the band Cairo.
