Sages comme des sauvages is a French duo that implies much more than one country and two people: their debut album Largue la peau is furrowed by journeys and returns, musing and borrowings. Their instrumentarium is linked to their lives.
Ismaël brought back a bouzouki from Greece (where Ava grew up), and a cavaquinho from Brazil (where his mother lived for a while). Ava plays a rare Greek tambourine called defi, that she sets on her lap, inserting her knees inside the drum and hitting the metal jingles with a Chinese chopstick she found in the kitchen. They each write their own songs, composing together, each following their natural slope, Ismaël favoring sophistication, Ava more inclined towards the unvarnished. They are obsessed with music from La Réunion and love to sing in creole.
The name “Sages comme des sauvages” is a pun, a wordplay. In French, the expression “sages comme des images” means to be seen and not heard, literally “tamed/wise as a picture/image”. By replacing the word image with savage, the duet implies that the wise ones might not be as tamed as they seem and certainly no silent postcards. Like any good pun, their name is hard to translate, but no more than Einstürzende Neubauten.
Their debut album “Largue la peau” (Drop the skin) was released in France in September 2015 and was well received by the national radios. Since then the duet has been touring intensively across France and Belgium, spreading their unique songs, subtly cobbled together, intuitive and knowledgeable at the same time, woven in colourful moving figures, unexpected rhythms and harmonies.
PARIS DEFEND
Sages comme des sauvages Lyrics

Comme à l'agonie
Te voilà seul à douter
Devant tes amis
Tu n'as pas su retrouver
L'annonce élégante
Qui garnirait ton CV
Te voilà bien intégré
Le pauvre ou le sombre
Te voilà bien résigné
Dans ton bel habit
Paris défend
Paris défend ses intérêts
Paris défonce
Ses enfants par milliers
Paris étend
Paris étend son rayonnement
Mais de l'autre côté
Serrer les dents n'est pas assez
Ces murs ont été construits
Pour te faire plier
Tout dessinés ou tout gris
C'est la même idée.
Tu t'es pourtant acharné
À gagner ta vie
Mais quand les dés sont pipés
Tricher coûte un prix aussi
Tu t'étais taillé les crocs
Pour contrer ta faim
Tu t'es retrouvé mordu
Tout en restant chien
Paris défend Paris défend ses intérêts...
The lyrics of Sages comme des sauvages's song "Paris defend" express the struggles of an individual who has lost their way in the city of Paris, feeling alone and uncertain in front of their friends. The lyrics are a critique of the societal pressure to conform and integrate, leading to a sense of resignation and apathy towards one's own life. The verse "Te voilà bien cultivé, comme à l'agonie" (You're so cultured, but you're dying inside) highlights the irony of how education and knowledge do not necessarily equate to happiness or success.
The idea of being defeated by societal norms is further explored in the lines "Ces murs ont été construits pour te faire plier, tout dessinés ou tout gris, c'est la même idée" (These walls were built to make you bend, whether they're designed or gray, it's the same idea). The song suggests that despite the reputation of Paris as a city of art, culture, and romance, it is also a city that can crush one's soul.
The chorus "Paris défend, Paris défend ses intérêts, Paris défonce ses enfants par milliers, Paris étend, Paris étend son rayonnement, mais de l'autre côté serrer les dents n'est pas assez" (Paris defends, Paris defends its interests, Paris smashes its thousands of children, Paris extends, Paris extends its radiance, but on the other side just gritting your teeth is not enough) reinforces the idea that the city is a complex place where the pursuit of success can sometimes come at the cost of sacrificing one's values and dreams.
Overall, Sages comme des sauvages's "Paris defend" is a poignant commentary on the realities of living in a city where cultural expectations can sometimes overshadow personal happiness and fulfillment.

La mélancolie tranpire ! Que j'aime ça! Bon, soyons réaliste, il va vite me falloir des piqouzes de SCDS en intra-veineuse pour continuer à vaquer au quotidien! Vous faites des maxilots, just in case ;) Vivement le CD in my pocket à défaut d'autre chose ;)

Bonjour! Je cherche la tablature de ce morceau... Ou peut être sinon un live pour voir la guitare... ;)
@SagesCommeDesSauvage
Salut, on est pas super au point au niveau des noms des accords et encore moins des tablatures. Tout est composé direct sur l'instrument, mais je peux te donner ce genre d'info là (en espérant que ça aide) :
La mesure est en 7/4
Couplet : Sim6 – Fa7 - Fa7 - Sim6
Refrain : Re (4) - Sib min6 - Sol maj7 - Fa7
@mryupanki
@SagesCommeDesSauvage Merci pour la réponse, je vais travailler ça dès ce soir! ;)
