Neon Lights
Sahara Hotnights Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh there you go again you are back in my mind
Without a warning sneaking up from behind
It is improper it is rude and unkind
Showing up from nowhere not giving a sign

I overheard somebody mention your name
Covered my ears and tied both of my hands
Bit my tongue to stop the fire and flames
So the excitement wouldn't turn into shame

Never take me back to the neon lights
I was a lost little wreck up all night
Never take me back to the neon lights
I was on the wrong track help me get on right

I said fine I will get over you with time
And your memory will fade along the line
But you sent out your most talented spy
To look me up and then track me down

I was committed to always tell the truth
Naive and confessional I blame it on my youth

Now I don't breathe a word it won't do anybody good
Mistakes that I have done still can not undo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sahara Hotnights's song, "Neon Lights", depict the feelings of someone who is haunted by a past lover. The song begins with the singer expressing surprise and irritation at the sudden reappearance of their old flame in their thoughts, seemingly out of nowhere. The singer recognizes that this is detrimental to their healing process and finds it impolite and unkind for their ex-lover to show up without any signs of warning. The chorus then sets in, with the singer expressing their desire to stay away from the past and move on, never to return to those nights of neon lights when they were lost and wrecked, and asking for help to get back on track.

The second verse of the song shows the singer's determination to get over their ex-lover and move on. They have accepted that time would heal the wounds and their lover's memory will eventually fade. Unfortunately, they are found and followed by a "talented spy" hired by their ex-lover, who once again brings their past back to them. The singer confesses to being naïve and unguarded before, but they have learned their lesson and will not speak of their previous mistakes.

The central theme of the song is the struggle to move on and the desire to leave the past behind. The singer stresses that revisiting the past will only be damaging and therefore requests to never be taken back to the neon lights – a symbol of their past wild and reckless nights.
