who do you think you are (who) / taking advantage of me this way? / Tell me, who do you think you are (who), / hurting me more with the things you say? / It's not fair, / you don't care. / Who do you really think that you are? (who) /

The lyrics of Saint Etienne's song "Who Do You Think You Are" explore the complex emotions of a girl who feels taken advantage of in a relationship. The first part of the song is introspective as the singer is questioning her own identity and wants to be someone who always does what's right and never makes her partner cry. However, she realizes that her partner is not good for her and has caused her emotional scars. She questions her partner's identity and wonders who they think they are to hurt her like this.
The second part of the song is more confrontational as the singer demands answers from her partner. She accuses them of taking advantage of her and hurting her with their words. She's frustrated that her partner doesn't seem to care about her feelings and doesn't think it's fair. The song ends on a strong note, with the singer asking her partner once again who they really think they are.
Overall, the song captures the tumultuous emotions of someone who's struggling with their identity and trying to assert themselves in a relationship that's not healthy. The repetitive chorus adds to the catchy tune and the use of the words "who do you think you are" effectively conveys the singer's anger and frustration.

Who do You Think You Are is a song written by Des Dyer of Jigsaw .
The band released their version as a single in a few European countries but not in their native UK where they allowed band Candlewick Green to record a version ( they shared the same management ) and it was a 1974 top 30 hit single for them.
In the USA the song was recorded and was a hit single for Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods .
The Candlewick Green arrangement is virtually identical to the original Jigsaw version although I think the hook line of the Jigsaw version is more powerful.
It has in recent years been recorded by Saint Etienne

Summer 1993..... A youthful young man (me!!) would play this every Friday and Saturday night as I got ready to go out on the town. Hoping to pull a Sarah Cracknell lookalike!! Now, as a 42 year old man, married (not quite Cracknell-esque, but she's ok!!) and with kids of my own, I listen to this (and Hobart Paving) with fond, fond memories. Timeless classic, hold onto dreams and keep on keeping on
