1997
Saint Motel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I've made so many new friends

With open arms they let me in

They say they'll be with me till the end
They say they'll stick through thick and thin
Its gonna happen, 1997
They crowd you like its dangerous
I heard theyre just no good.
I'd rather have you stay at home now like a good boy should.
I heard they cant be trusted
I heard they all wear white.
I'd rather have you prove me wrong than go and prove me right.

Mama, please don't make this harder.

Well, it’s tough to love another.
And it’s hard to find a friend friend.
Somebody else who has no others.
Somebody else who understands.
Then it happened, in 1997.
The crowd you like is dangerous.
I heard they're just no good.
I’d rather have you stay at home now like a good boy should.
I heard they can't be trusted.
I heard they all wear white.
I'd rather have you prove me wrong than go and prove me right.
Mama, please don't make this harder.

Well, I've made so many new friends.

They say they'll be with me ‘till the end.
And it's gonna happen in 1997.

Overall Meaning

The song "1997" by Saint Motel is open for interpretation, but it seems to be about a mother's concern for her son who is hanging out with the wrong crowd. The first verse suggests that the son has made a lot of new friends who have welcomed him with open arms, and they promise to stick with him through thick and thin. However, his mother has heard rumors that these friends are no good and can't be trusted, and she would rather have her son stay at home where it is safe. The chorus repeats the year 1997 and reminds the listener that the crowd the son is hanging out with is dangerous, and the mother begs him not to make things harder by continuing to associate with them.

The second verse speaks to the difficulty of finding genuine connections in life, and the irony that sometimes we gravitate towards the wrong people despite our search for authenticity. Again, the chorus repeats with a reminder that these friends are not to be trusted, and the mother pleads for her son to stay home. The overall tone of the song is melancholic and reflective, and it highlights the tension between youthful curiosity and the protective instincts of parents.

This is my first time actually watching the music video.....man I really thought this was just a lighthearted song about a lonely kid who's befriended by a group of troublemaking but friendly kids...

I know right

This whole song is very well put together. Really brings the cultist mindset to a level where you can sympathize.

It's a great song but I don't sympathize with the cultist mindset.

This song is about the heavens gate mass suicide. It about a man being told by his mother he's in a cult and going into denial. The suicide was in 1997. They believed they would leave there body and fly away on a comet to paradise
