Saint Motel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions

Well, I can die a happy man
If I could be with you
Behind these eyes
I believe fantasies can come true

It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions

Find the time to be the man
That you like to talk to
In dreams, it seems that I can be
Anyone you want me to, oh

It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions
It's in the ions, ions, ions, ions

Love me, hold me
Find me, on the off-beat
Hold my hand
Say I'm your man
Take me down to the promised land

Oh, woah
Ah, ah
Oh, woah
Ah, ah

Sunlight
Moonbeams
Your hands inside my dreams
Hold me close
Never let go
Promised land, and away we go

Oh, woah
Ah, ah
Oh, woah
Ah, ah

Oh, woah
Ah, ah
Oh, woah
Ah, ah

Home is where the heart is
Down by the neighbor kids
Back where we use our given names
Sweet, sweet curiosity
Led me to this here street
Please don't make this go away

Don't
Wake up
Wake up
Wake up

Here, we can do as we please
Whoa, living free
Oh, take a day by day
Sweet, sweet curiosity
Led me to this here street
Please don't make this go away

Don't
Wake up
Wake up
Wake up

Don't
Wake up
Wake up
Wake up

Don't
Wake up

Wake up
Wake up

Overall Meaning

The song "Daydream / Wetdream / Nightmare" by Saint Motel explores themes of desire, escapism, and fantasy. The repeated phrase "It's in the ions" suggests that these emotions and desires are deeply ingrained in our very being, tying us to our dreams and fantasies.

In the verses, the singer expresses a longing to be with someone, believing that fantasies can come true. They yearn to be the person the other likes to talk to and feel that in their dreams, they can be anyone the other person desires. This highlights the idea of escapism, using dreams as a way to explore different identities and fulfill desires that may not be possible in reality.

The chorus shifts to a more passionate tone, with the lines "Love me, hold me, find me, on the off-beat." Here, the singer is pleading for affection and closeness, wanting to be acknowledged and loved. The mention of sunlight, moonbeams, and dreams intensifies the idea of a dream-like state where anything is possible.

The final section of the song introduces the concept of home and longing for a sense of belonging. The line "Home is where the heart is, down by the neighbor kids" suggests a nostalgia for familiar surroundings and a desire for a simple, carefree existence. The repeated plea of "Don't wake up" reflects the fear of losing this dreamlike state and the desire to hold onto it as long as possible.

Overall, "Daydream / Wetdream / Nightmare" delves into the complexities of desire, fantasy, and the longing for connection and escapism.

I like to think that the man is really married to a mermaid, and the lines at the end are actually saying 'Wake up, wake up' because the fisherman is having a nightmare about his wife leaving him when in reality she's right there and loves him despite their differences. I'm also a big fan of happy endings lmao.

I like this theory

yeah, I understood it that way too! It's a song about dreams after all, it's quite logical to put a "it was all a dream" twist at the end :) I mean sure, there's the option of him only dreaming of a better reality at the end, but... I like happy endings

I like this too, happy ending please

Hate to be the guy that brings the negativity but I think this could be something like Inception: at the end, he thought he wakes up but the reality is he is dying and what we see is simply a figment of his imagination, conjured up by his brain as he is suffering from hypoxia, since he is thrown into the ocean and let to drown by his cheating wife. I think this might be the case as I think the mismatched detail at the end really hints at his brain losing grip on reality. In the Little Mermaid story, I think the mermaid had to switch from tail to leg to live on land. However, here, we see that his wife has a tail still, which does not make sense. Thus, this mismatch might be indicative of illogical thinking, which is prevalent in oxygen-deprived brains. That's my 1.5 cents, make of it what you will lol

To me the song tells a story of a sailor who loves the sea and his wife. The sea returns his love but his wife doesn't and in fact cheats on him with another man. When the sailor returns to his house, he sees the two together and in his anger attacks the man, but his wife knocks him out and then together, the sailor's wife and her lover dump him in the sea. The sailor has always loved the sea, and the sea has loved him, so she gives him another chance at life, another chance at love. He is reborn now with someone he loves, and someone who loves him back, ie the mermaid.

It's a really beautiful song...

It really is beautiful, and I read an article about the video's animator, Sidsel Sorensen. While she didn't explain what happens after the husband gets home unexpectedly, she did say that St Motel were really pleasant to work with and that the song's lyrics were open for interpretation. She wanted a sea theme, and she built one around Fano Island and the fishermen and their wives. The husbands were often at sea for long periods, earning a living, and some of the wives had 'company' then. They often had the pair of dog statues in the window, and based on how these were positioned, a lover would know if the husband was away at sea or not.

@pennypay1 that is quite interesting...

Right at the end, in the sea, he opens his eyes on the word "home"
