The original line-up consisted of Dave Chandler (guitar), Mark Adams (bass), Armando Acosta (drums) and Scott Reagers (vocals). They recorded their first two albums before Scott Weinrich replaced Reagers in 1986. The line-up of Chandler, Adams, Acosta and Weinrich is the longest-lasting. The third album Born Too Late (1986) is generally acknowledged as their best release.[3]
After breaking up in 1996 and briefly reforming in 2003, Saint Vitus reunited again in 2008 with the band's "classic" line-up, featuring Weinrich, Chandler, Adams and Acosta, and embarked on a successful tour. However, after 30 years in the band, Acosta left Saint Vitus in 2009 due to worsening health, and was replaced by Henry Vasquez. By 2016, both Weinrich and Adams had left Saint Vitus and were replaced by Reagers and Patrick Bruders respectively, leaving Chandler as the only constant member of the band and reuniting two-fourths of the original lineup.

Thunder roars â?? lightning cracks
A phantom ship â?? she appears
Lost horizons â?? suddenly near
Neptune please help me
Don't want no burial at sea
Tell yourself â?? dead men can't scream
One legged specter â?? riding high
He's commanding â?? the rape of the sky
Neptune please help me
Don't want no burial at sea
Twilight killers, blood stained teeth
Guiding you into the reef
You are smashed to bits, far below
You're one of us now, you've got no soul
Join the dead men â?? who cannot die
Committed forever â?? to soar 'cross the sky
Skull and crossbones â?? a field of black
Laughs insanely â?? but no one laughs back
Neptune please help me
Don't want no burial at sea
Neptune please help me
Don't want no burial at sea
The lyrics for Saint Vitus's song "Burial at Sea" describes the fear and desperation of a sailor who doesn't want to be lost at sea. The opening lines paint a frightening picture of a pirate ship with a skull and crossbones flag, amidst a raging storm. The sailor pleads to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, for help to avoid being buried at sea. The sailor hears laughter and blood-curdling screams, trying to convince themselves that dead men can't scream. The song mentions a one-legged specter, who seems to be commanding the sky and thunder. The lyricist paints a haunting picture of the Twilight Killers, who guide sailors to the reef and smash their ships. Once the sailors are dead, their souls become one with the "dead men who cannot die" and are doomed to roam the skies forever. The song ends with a final plea to Neptune from the sailor who fears becoming one of the undead.
