Stranded
Saints Lyrics

Like a snake calling on the phone
I've got no time to be alone
There is someone coming at me all the time
Yeah babe I think I'll lose my mind

'Cause I'm stranded on my own
Stranded far from home, all right
I'm riding on a midnight train
And everybody looks just the same
A subway light it's dirty reflection
I'm lost babe I got no direction

And I'm stranded on my own
Stranded far from home, all right

Stranded - yeah I'm on my own
Stranded - I'm so far from home
Stranded - you gotta leave me alone
'Cause I'm stranded on my own, stranded far from home

Come on!

Look at me looking at you
There ain't a thing that I can do
You are lost, your mind is stuck in a whirl
Yeah honey such a stupid girl

Now I'm stranded on my own
Stranded far from home, come on

Stranded - yeah I'm on my own
Stranded - I'm so far from home
Stranded - you gotta leave me alone
'Cause I'm stranded on my own, stranded far from home

All right

Livin' in a world insane
They cut out some heart and some brain
Been filling it up with dirt
Yeah baby dunno how it hurts

To be stranded on your own
Stranded far from home, all right

Stranded - I'm so far from home
Stranded - yeah I'm on my own
Stranded - you got to leave me alone

Come on!

Stranded - I'm so far from home
Stranded - yeah I'm on my own
Stranded - you got to leave me alone

'Cause I'm stranded on my own
Stranded

Overall Meaning

The song "Stranded" by The Saints tells the story of someone who feels lost and alone in a world that seems to be closing in on them. The singer compares their situation to being trapped like a snake on the phone, always on the edge and never able to relax. They feel like they're being pursued by something that they can't quite put their finger on, and that they're in danger of losing their mind.

The singer then describes riding on a train, surrounded by strangers who all seem to blend together, feeling lost and without direction. They are once again stranded, far from home and without anyone to turn to. The chorus repeats this theme, emphasizing the singer's isolation and desperation.

As the song progresses, the singer's frustration and fear become more palpable. They describe feeling powerless, unable to help someone they care about who is also lost and struggling. In the end, the singer laments the state of the world, bemoaning the fact that people's hearts and minds are being filled with "dirt." Despite this, the chorus repeats over and over, a plea for someone to come and rescue them from their lonely existence.

Overall, the lyrics of "Stranded" convey a sense of existential despair and hopelessness. The singer is trapped in a world that seems to be closing in on them, with no way out and no one to turn to. The repetition of the chorus reinforces this sense of entrapment, creating a sense of claustrophobia and desperation.

Man, I love this song & the whole album. I bought it way back in 1977 when I was 16 yrs old & I still listen to it all the time. The best punk album ever and it don't seem anyone knows them. They start out with this & it never lets up through the whole record. And everyone told me when I got old I'd be listening to Perry Como.

@adam364

the saints debut album is one of the best of all time!!!

@FranZSound1

This band has influenced most US punk - hardcore bands, yet don´t have that "recognition" ... essential listening & exceptional for the Australian scene...ahead of their time.

@cbob7

This was one of the first punk songs I ever heard, and it was like a dive into cold, clean water. It's as bracing today as it was then.

@spectrech

Most underrated punk band ever. Back in 1977 they were original and furious, with an unique guitar sound and a great voice. Their first two LP's should be in every serious punk collection...and yes, they're in mine since then.

This record was a great glimmer of hope to me in the NYC summer of '77. The video - unknown to me until this viewing - is so perfectly fucking punk rock that it makes me want to laugh, scream, cry and beat my head against a wall with inchoate joy, rage, or both. That's the way this single first made me feel 46 years ago, and hearing it in 2023 still makes me want to fall in love and smash phone booths. Of course, now I fall in love with age-appropriate partners, and...there are no more phone booths left to smash. Today I take my comfort in knowing that there will always be fifteen-year-old kids out there, still discovering music that makes them aware of the feelings they can't yet describe; music that shows them they're not alone. I hope those kids will always find great records, places to gather, a kind community, and lots of inanimate objects to smash. Worked for me! <3
