This Perfect Day
Saints Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't talk to me about what you done
Ain't nothing has changed, it all goes on
And they'll keep laughing till the end

I've seen them drive around in cars
All look the same, get drunk in bars
And don't talk back, we got no social rights
Oh, perfect day
What more to say?
Don't need no one to tell me what I don't already know

We got no high times, always flat
If you go out, you don't come back
It's all so funny I can't laugh

Oh, perfect day
What more to say?
Don't need no one to tell me what I don't already know

Don't talk to me about what's you done
Ain't nothing has changed, it all goes on
And they'll keep laughing till the end

Oh, perfect day
What more to say?
I don't need no one to tell me what I don't already know

Don't need nothin'
Don't need no one

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to “This Perfect Day” by Saints are a reflection on the monotony of society and the futility of striving for change. The repetition of “Ain't nothing has changed, it all goes on” emphasizes the apathy of the singer towards current affairs. They have seen people drive around in cars and get drunk in bars, all while conforming to the same societal norms. It’s a commentary on the lack of individuality and instead a need to fit into the mold for social acceptance. The line “we got no social rights” is a nod to the oppression that still exists, and the injustice that is still prevalent despite the facade of a perfect society.

The repetition of “Oh, perfect day, what more to say?” is both sarcastic and melancholic. The singer longs for something more, while also recognizing that this is the only reality they know. The line “Don't need no one to tell me what I don't already know” is a declaration of independence, but also shows the inability to see beyond the current status quo. The lack of high times and the constant flatness is reiterated with the line “If you go out, you don't come back”. The final lines “Don't need nothin'” and “Don't need no one” show the hopelessness and isolation the singer feels in this perfect day society.

One of the greatest punk singles ever. Under no circumstances should you ever listen to the slow version that appears on The Saints second album.

@chuckabbate5924

Yup this single version is way nastier. The guitar is absolutely filthy.

@Chuck Abbate Fuckin' A!!

I listened to the EP this was originally on, at a friend’s house. I eagerly scarfed up the Saint’s second album when it was released, only to hear a far inferior version of this song. I thought “What the heck? You just let go of one of the most powerful punk (metal) tunes ever released to put a mere shadow of it on your album? Are you guys NUTS!”

@dariowestern

This song did not get to No.1 in the UK. It only reached No.34 in the charts, but it should have gone into the top spot.

@doinacrancher8412

Similar story as Teenage Kicks by The Undertones, no.31.

@gavaniacono

Still absolutely stunning, after all these decades.

R.I.P. Chris Bailey...10.4.2022.

This was one of the earliest Punk singles I bought. This Perfect Day/L.I.E.S. & taken from a Good Album (Stranded).
Erotic Neurotic and all.

Great memories back in the day.

@TrevorBarre

Mix it up with The Heartbreakers 'Chinese Rocks'.
