He was outcast by his family & ostracized by the community, because he was an albino - a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture. In 1967, he left Djoliba for Bamako, where he joined the government sponsored Super Rail Band de Bamako (aka Super Rail Band). In 1973, Keita joined the group Les Ambassadeurs. Keita and Les Ambassadeurs fled political unrest in Mali during the mid-1970s for Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire & changed the group's name to Les Ambassadeurs Internationales. The reputation of Les Ambassadeurs Internationales rose to the international level in the 1970s and in 1977 Keita received a National Order award from the president of Guinea, Sékou Touré.
Keita moved to Paris in 1984 to reach a larger audience. His music combines traditional West African music styles with influences from both Europe and the Americas, while maintaining an overall Islamic style. Musical instruments that are commonly featured in Keita's work include balafon, djembe, guitar, kora, organ, saxophone, and synthesizer.
His latest album, M'Bemba, was released in October 2005.
This 'Bio' is copied from the Salif Keita page. Apparently there is question about the correct spelling of his name (with single or double dotted i).

The lyrics of Salif Keita's song Folon are sung in his native language, Bambara, and are rich in meaning. The repetition of the words "Folon" and "mogò makotè" creates a hypnotic effect and adds to the overall emotional impact of the song. The first verse seems to be about the transience of life, with "Folon" meaning "a leaf" which is a metaphor for the ephemeral nature of everything. The repetition of "né té gninika" which means "it's going to disappear" reinforces this idea. The third and fourth lines talk about how everything eventually disappears, but no one can understand why.
The second verse provides more insight into the message of the song, with "Kouma douma bé môgo mi konò" which means "No one knows where they came from" and "Konkò bé môgo mi naaaaa" which means "No one knows where they're going." This verse is a universal statement about the human condition, highlighting our ignorance about the meaning of life and what lies beyond. The chorus repeats that everything is fleeting and that we should cherish what we have while it lasts. The final verse shifts focus to another word, "Sissan" which means "the morning star." Salif Keita sings about how even the morning star, which seems to shine so brightly, will eventually fade. The phrase "Sissan môgô mako bè é la" is a poetic allusion to the fact that even the most beautiful and enduring things in life will one day come to an end.

In the past, no one questioned you
In the past, no one questioned me
In the past, that’s how it used to be
In the past, whatever happened
In the past, no one wanted to know
People who had suggestions to make
People who could think for themselves
People who were hungry
In the past whatever happened
In the past, you could not speak about it.
Today, you are supposed to take part
Today, I’m supposed to take part
Today, we are all supposed to take part
Today, whatever’s happening
we’re all asked to take part
Today, people want to know
In the past, people did not want to know.

C'est envoûtant et sublime à la fois.
J'ai assisté à son concert en 1985 à Alger pour la fête de la jeunesse et son duo avec Mory Kante, un moment qui marquera mon attachement à cette musique
