Lucky In The Sky With Diamonds
Saloa Farah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds, ah, ah
Follow her down to a bridge by the fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies.
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
That grow so incredibly high.
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore
Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
And you're gone.
Picture yourself on a train in a station
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,

Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sáloa Farah's cover of the classic Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, paints a surreal, almost psychedelic picture of a dreamlike world. It opens with the singer imagining themselves in a boat on a river surrounded by tangerine trees and marmalade skies. They hear a call and answer slowly to the "girl with kaleidoscope eyes" who invites them to follow her. This girl is Lucy, who's in the sky with diamonds.

The second verse takes the singer and Lucy to a bridge by the fountain, where they encounter "rocking horse people" who eat "marshmallow pies," and everyone smiles as they drift past the flowers that reach incredible heights. They see newspaper taxis waiting on the shore, ready to take them away. The singer then climbs into one of these taxis, with their head in the clouds and disappears.

The song takes another surreal turn and the final verse has the singer picturing themselves on a train in a station with "plasticine porters" sporting "looking glass ties" - a clear reference to the book Alice in Wonderland. Suddenly, they see Lucy again, now at the turnstile, with her kaleidoscope eyes, bringing the song full circle.

Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds is possibly one of the most controversial songs The Beatles ever recorded, with many people at the time interpreting it to be an ode to LSD. But in fact, the inspiration for the song came from a drawing by John Lennon's son, Julian when he was four years old, showing his classmate, Lucy Vodden, surrounded by stars. Julian brought the picture home from school and when he showed it to his father, John was inspired by the image and wrote the song.
