Hot, Cool & Vicious received little attention until a San Francisco DJ named Cameron Paul created a remix of "Push It" (The b-side to "Tramp"). Mr. Paul's remix of "Push It", rereleased as a single, quickly became a national hit and was nominated for a Grammy, pushing both the single and LP to Platinum album status.
They released A Salt With a Deadly Pepa, which was only a minor hit, though it featured "Shake Your Thang". Their third original LP, Blacks Magic, which received generally positive reviews and expanded Salt-N-Pepa's fanbase among hip hop fans using more R&B. It included "Let's Talk About Sex", one of their biggest songs.
Salt-N-Pepa left Next Plateau and the influence of Azor released "Very Necessary", a largely self-produced album in 1993 (see 1993 in music), and it performed very well on the charts, buoyed by "Shoop" and "Whatta Man" (with En Vogue). In 1994, they appeared in the motion picture "Who's The Man?".
The less commercially successful single "None of Your Business," won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 1995. Since Very Necessary, both Salt and Pepa have focused primarily on their acting careers. They released their final album "Brand New" in 1997.
Despite their girl group beginnings, Salt-N-Pepa insist that they wrote many of the lyrics on their first album, and by Blacks Magic they displayed a sex positive, and responsible, feminism, and are often seen as innovators or role models.
In March 1999, Salt-N-Pepa embarked on their final live tour. Pepa (Sandy Denton) married Treach of Naughty By Nature on July 27, 1999. Salt-N-Pepa's greatest-hits album, entitled Salt-N-Pepa: The Best Of was released on January 25, 2000. Treach and Pepa were divorced on July 31, 2001. The group officially disbanded in 2002. Upon disbanding, Salt (Cheryl James) claimed she had become a born-again Christian, and would no longer be involved in hip-hop. However, all that changed when Cheryl announced that she would be releasing her first solo cd "Salt of the Earth" which later changed to "Salt Unrapped".
Cheryl James and Sandy Denton appeared on VH1's Hip Hop Honors in November 2004 without Spinderella. They did not perform.
In March 2005, it was announced that Sandy Denton would join Jose Canseco, Bronson Pinchot, Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth, Caprice Bourret, Janice Dickinson, and Carey Hart on the 5th season of the VH1 series The Surreal Life.
Salt-N-Pepa reunited on September 22, 2005, and gave their first performance in six years. They sang Whatta Man, along with En Vogue, as a part of VH1's Hip Hop Honors program.
Groove Me
Salt-N-Pepa Lyrics

(Can you groove with me?)
Got the phat groove on the reel
[Chorus]
Groove me I need you
So put it here baby open your eyes
And let me groove you
Got the phat groove on the reel
So put it here baby open your eyes
And let me groove you
Got the phat groove...
Salt N Pepa came back to the mic
It's not the end of the road
And like the boom in the bass about to explode
I got the rhymes to keep you goin' like petro
So everytime you see me on the mic
You know you just can't let go
So here we go again, sexy in a twin-pack
Straight from my eyes down to my back stacked
You're under my control
I got your heart and soul
Go down and take your time
I want you deep inside
So put it here, yeah, baby
Open your eyes and let me groove you
The music in my mic can move you
Like engine-engine number nine
I got the rump-shakin' flavor with the nasty rhyme
So if the crowd can move with me, move with me
Salt-N-Pepa said groove with me, groove with me
[Chorus]
So put it here, baby
Open your eyes and let me groove you
Got the phat groove on the reel
So put it here, baby
Open your eyes and let me groove you
Got the phat groove on the reel
[Chorus]
Well I'm the P-E-P-A, Pepa here to stay
And good when naughty so hip-hop hooray
I rock the mic like Anita freak a love song
I must say, yes, it's been so long
But now I'm back, bustin' phat rhymes, and I'm here to stay
So you got to give it up like Marv Gaye
You're under my control
I got your heart and soul
Go down and take your time
I want you deep inside
Yes, yes, I'm swingin' my rhymes at full speed
To groove with the style 'cause it's full breed
I bring it home like Stephanie Mills, and then I chill
Got the phat groove on the reel
So move with the tune, yeah, move with me
Salt-N-Pepa said groove with me, groove with me
[Chorus]
Why don't you throw it to me now?
I mean now, yeah babe, right now
Let the bass boom-boom and pow-pow me
I like my music real loud and grimey
Slick and slimey, you may try me
But can't run no bullshit by me
'Cause Wink and I, we flow to a ??? beat automatically
Anything else can be a ???, G, see
See, see what I'm sayin'?
See the crowd swayin' to the phat joint playin'
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Salt-N-Pepa's "Groove Me" describe a person who has a phat groove on the reel and who wants to open the eyes of the other person and groove him/her. In the chorus, the person sings that he/she needs the other person to groove him/her, and so open eyes and let the singer groove him/her. Salt-N-Pepa make a reference to a previous song entitled "Push It" as they say, "Salt N Pepa come back to the mic, it's not the end of the road." The song is a classic example of the hip-hop dance music of the time, complete with a catchy beat, repetitive chorus, and rhymes aimed at moving the crowd. The lyrics are filled with sexual innuendos, and Salt-N-Pepa use the music to express their confidence and dominance that they have over their listeners.
The verses feature Salt-N-Pepa trading verses as they rhyme about their ability to "groove" their listeners. Salt raps about how she has the rhymes to keep people going, while Pepa brags about her ability to control people's hearts and souls. The bridge, where Pepa raps about being back and bustin' phat rhymes, is a classic example of hip-hop swagger, with the singer proclaiming their dominance over the music world. The chorus reiterates the song's message about grooving with someone, as Salt and Pepa encourage their listeners to let go and let them take control of the groove.
