Hot, Cool & Vicious received little attention until a San Francisco DJ named Cameron Paul created a remix of "Push It" (The b-side to "Tramp"). Mr. Paul's remix of "Push It", rereleased as a single, quickly became a national hit and was nominated for a Grammy, pushing both the single and LP to Platinum album status.
They released A Salt With a Deadly Pepa, which was only a minor hit, though it featured "Shake Your Thang". Their third original LP, Blacks Magic, which received generally positive reviews and expanded Salt-N-Pepa's fanbase among hip hop fans using more R&B. It included "Let's Talk About Sex", one of their biggest songs.
Salt-N-Pepa left Next Plateau and the influence of Azor released "Very Necessary", a largely self-produced album in 1993 (see 1993 in music), and it performed very well on the charts, buoyed by "Shoop" and "Whatta Man" (with En Vogue). In 1994, they appeared in the motion picture "Who's The Man?".
The less commercially successful single "None of Your Business," won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 1995. Since Very Necessary, both Salt and Pepa have focused primarily on their acting careers. They released their final album "Brand New" in 1997.
Despite their girl group beginnings, Salt-N-Pepa insist that they wrote many of the lyrics on their first album, and by Blacks Magic they displayed a sex positive, and responsible, feminism, and are often seen as innovators or role models.
In March 1999, Salt-N-Pepa embarked on their final live tour. Pepa (Sandy Denton) married Treach of Naughty By Nature on July 27, 1999. Salt-N-Pepa's greatest-hits album, entitled Salt-N-Pepa: The Best Of was released on January 25, 2000. Treach and Pepa were divorced on July 31, 2001. The group officially disbanded in 2002. Upon disbanding, Salt (Cheryl James) claimed she had become a born-again Christian, and would no longer be involved in hip-hop. However, all that changed when Cheryl announced that she would be releasing her first solo cd "Salt of the Earth" which later changed to "Salt Unrapped".
Cheryl James and Sandy Denton appeared on VH1's Hip Hop Honors in November 2004 without Spinderella. They did not perform.
In March 2005, it was announced that Sandy Denton would join Jose Canseco, Bronson Pinchot, Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth, Caprice Bourret, Janice Dickinson, and Carey Hart on the 5th season of the VH1 series The Surreal Life.
Salt-N-Pepa reunited on September 22, 2005, and gave their first performance in six years. They sang Whatta Man, along with En Vogue, as a part of VH1's Hip Hop Honors program.
Start The Party
Salt-N-Pepa Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Slippin' on my dancin' shoes 'cause I'm a lady of the eighties
It's Friday night I just got paid my house is pumpin'
Or listenin' to my Hammer tape while my sound system is dumpin'
I shared my fly fly Mercedes yo lit the highway like a torch
On the way to pick up Spindy we raced with a 1 9 D
He was a sucker duck if he thought he could buck with us in E
The party started
CHORUS
Let's get this party started
Let's get this party started right
Rolled up at the party, saw a fella black and fine
Bow-legged, high-top fade, then I said, "Yo, that one's mine"
Stepped out of the ride, told the bouncer, "Hold my Benzy"
Heard the bass, it was the place so I slipped my man a penny
When we walked in the jam fans met us at the door
They yelled, "We love you Salt and Pepa!" "Yes, we love y'all even more!"
Some foul, wack, nappy bitty tried to step to Spinderella
I was cool, I made my move, then I droppped her like a fella
Start the party, boy
CHORUS
Now this is what you call a hip-hop beat from S and P
So get out on the dancefloor, and don't even rough with me
I ain't goin' for it, I ain't buyin' it so don't even try me
Dance sucker, Mother Tucker can, that old lady gets busy
Yeah, I don't give a damn, Salty is who I am
And man, I'm gonna slam this jam, you understand?
Yes, we will stay the queens no matter what the means
The party started, let's get retarded, now work them bluejeans
Rock the party, y'all
CHORUS
[Yo, Salt, you want to continue the story?]
Yes, I told the people move, he made a move
To the stage and grabbed the mic
From these stank, sorry, frauds - Run D.M.C. look-alikes
Spinderella took the set, made her fingers nice and wet
And you bet she made that DJ sweat, and he won't soon forget
Pepa took on the speaker, bust an oh, so funky rhyme
I did a step right on time and made the crowd lose their minds
The whole place was on the floor, we was rockin' hardcore-core
We left them wantin' more, and we headed out the door
We rocked the party
CHORUS
The lyrics of "Start The Party" by Salt-N-Pepa describe a night out in the 80s, with the singer getting ready for a party and driving her Mercedes to pick up her friends. The lyrics celebrate the idea of enjoying life and having a good time. The singer is described as a lady of the 80s who loves to dance, and the song sets the scene for a night of fun and good vibes. The chorus encourages people to get the party started and enjoy themselves.
The lyrics also touch on issues of gender and power dynamics. The singer describes a man at the party who catches her eye and boldly takes the lead in pursuing him. The lyrics suggest that the woman is confident in herself and unafraid to make the first move. The song also references other hip-hop artists of the time, such as Run D.M.C., and celebrates the culture and creativity of the time.
