Dead Boys
Sam Fender Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The anniversaries are short lived
But they come back around at a breakneck speed
My world spins so fast
The centrifugal force keep me stuck in the middle

We close our eyes, learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
We close our eyes, learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown

We all tussle with the black dog
Some out loud and some in silence
Everybody 'round here just drink
'Cause that's our culture

We close our eyes, learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
We close our eyes, learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown

(Oh)
(Oh)
(Oh)
(Oh)

We close our eyes, learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
We close our eyes, learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown

All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown

All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sam Fender's song "Dead Boys" speak about the struggles of mental health, suicide, and substance abuse in a small town. The song reflects on the sad reality that many young men living in small towns eventually succumb to these issues, leading to their untimely deaths. The opening lines of the song, "The anniversaries are short-lived but they come back around at a breakneck speed, my world spins so fast, the centrifugal force keeps me stuck in the middle" reflects on how quickly time flies and how life can change in an instant.

The lines "We close our eyes, learn our pain, nobody ever could explain, all the dead boys in our hometown" focus on the idea that people in these small towns can't seem to understand why so many young men are dying, assuming responsibility for their own pain as they have no one to help them deal with their grief. The next significant phrase of the song is "We all tussle with the black dog, some out loud and some in silence," which is a metaphor for depression. It showcases the importance of talking about one's struggles, be they mental or emotional, as there is still a stigma around mental health that makes it hard to be open.

The song speaks about the idea of accepting pain, of the small-town mentality of never talking about or trying to change things, as "Everybody 'round here just drinks 'cause that's our culture." Sam Fender's "Dead Boys" is an insightful commentary on the struggles of small towns and mental health, underlining that we need to have conversations about mental health and be willing to ask for help.

I attempted suicide just over 3 months ago. Taken by police to Goodmayes psychiatric hospital in London and since then have started rebuilding my life (I'm in my 40s). This is one of only two songs I've found that have allowed me to release my emotions, step back and reevaluate. Music has so much power if you open your heart to it. Thank you Sam.
