The Devil & The Huntsman
Sam Lee Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Young man came from hunting faint, tired and weary
What does ail my Lord, my dearie?
Oh, brother dear, let my bed be made
For I feel the gripe of the woody nightshade

Men need a man would die as soon
Out of the light of a mage's moon
But it's not by bone, but yet by blade
Can break the magic that the devil made

And it's not my fire, but was forged in flame
Can drown the sorrows of a huntsman's pain

This young man he died fair soon
By the light of a hunter'e moon
'Twas not by bone, nor yet by blade
Of the berries of the woody nightshade

Oh Father dear lie and be safe
From the path that the devil made

Overall Meaning

The Devil & The Huntsman is a haunting and atmospheric song written by Sam Lee. It tells the tale of a young man who has returned from hunting, but is suffering from the poisonous effects of the woody nightshade. His brother tends to him, but there is little he can do as the poison takes hold. The young man knows that he is doomed, and speaks of the power of magic to challenge even the strongest of men. He speaks of the need for a magical fire that can drown the sorrows of a huntsman's pain, but knows that only death will free him from the curse that has befallen him.

The lyrics of The Devil & The Huntsman are full of dark and mystical imagery. They suggest that there are forces in the world that are beyond human understanding, and that it is often impossible to fight against them. The song creates a sense of foreboding and danger, as if the devil himself is watching over the huntsman, waiting for his moment to strike. The haunting melody and Sam Lee's mournful vocals add to the sense of tragedy and loss that permeates the song.

👉 LYRICS for 'The Devil and The Huntsman' aka 'The Wild, Wild Berry' 👈

Young man came from hunting faint and weary
"What does ail my lord, my dearie?"
"Oh brother dear, let my bed be made
For I feel the gripe of the woody nightshade"

Many a man would die as soon
Out of the light of a mage's moon
'Twas not by bolt, but yet by blade
Can break the magic that the devil made

'Twas not by fire, but was forged in flame
That can drown the sorrows of a huntsman's pain

This young man he died fair soon
By the light of the hunters' moon
'Twas not by bolt, nor yet by blade
[But] of the berries of the woody nightshade

"Oh father dear lie here be safe (?)
From the path that the devil made"

I can't find 'The Devil and The Huntsman' lyrics anywhere so I'm going from what I think it sounds like to me on this video. If anyone finds the lyrics or think it says something else please let me know. The line with (?) is the only one I'm having doubts with.

=================================

Song Info:
The original song, 'The Wild, Wild Berry' is possibly based on a Anglo-Scottish border ballad, 'Lord Randall' and tells the tale of Lord Randall returning home to his mother after visiting his lover. Through the mother's inquiry, it is gradually revealed that the Lord has been poisoned by his lover. 'The Devil and The Huntsman' by Sam Lee and Daniel Pemberton is based on Ray Driscoll of Dulwich, London version of 'Lord Randall' and is called 'The Wild, Wild Berry'.

Other Notes:
Printed in English Dance and Song, vol. 56 no. 3, Autumn 1994. Ray Driscoll was born in Ireland in 1922, but grew up in London. He learned 'The Wild, Wild Berry' and its unusual tune while living in Shropshire, from an itinerant farm worker called Harry Civil, who used to work on a nearby farm and slept in the barn. Harry was infamous in the locality and was thrown out of pubs on more than one occasion. 😊

Ray Driscoll's 'The Wild, Wild Berry'

Young man come from hunting, faint and weary
"What doth ail my lord, my dearie?"
"Oh mother dear, let my bed be made
For I feel the gripe of the woody nightshade."

Lie low, sweet Randal
Now all you young wains that do eat full well
And they that sup right merry
'Tis better, I entreat, to have toads for your meat
Than to eat of the wild, wild berry.

This young man, he died eftsoon
By the light of a hunter's moon
'Twas not by bolt, nor yet by blade,
But the deathly gripe of the deadly nightshade.

Lie low, sweet Randal
Now all you young men that do eat full well
And they that sup right merry
'Tis better, I entreat, to have toads for your meat
Than to eat of the wild, wild berry.

This lord's false love, they hanged her high
For her deeds were the cause of her love to die
And within her locks, they entwined a braid
Of the leaves and berry of the deadly nightshade.

Lie low, sweet Randal
Now all you young men that do eat full well
And they that sup right merry
'Tis better, I entreat, to have toads for your meat
Than to eat of the wild, wild berry.
