Life Support

Cause the darkness is surrounding you
This is my world, this is my choice
And you're the drug that gets me through
I've been waiting for an answer
Because I built this bed for two
I'm just waiting on your answer
Could you see that I am yours?
So will you be my life support?
You're my life support
Sick of waking up in darkness
When the sky is always painted blue
There's a method to my madness
It's clear that you don't have a clue
I've been waiting for an answer
Because I built this bed for two
I'm just waiting on your answer
I built this bed for me and you
Could you see that I am yours?
So will you be my life support?
You're my life support
Can't you see that I am yours?
So will you be my life support?
I've been sleeping with the lights on
Cause the darkness is surrounding you
The lyrics of Life Support by Sam Smith convey a deep sense of longing and desperation. In the first verse, the singer admits to sleeping with the lights on because they feel surrounded by darkness, likely a metaphor for feeling overwhelmed or consumed by something. The next two lines suggest a toxic relationship, where the singer has chosen to stay with someone who is like a drug to them, but who is also the source of their pain. The chorus is a plea for this person to be their "life support," to come through for them in their time of need, even when they feel surrounded by darkness.
The second verse deepens this sense of longing and desperation, where the singer is "sick of waking up in darkness" and wants to break free from the cycle of pain. The line "there's a method to my madness" suggests that there is a reason why the singer is allowing themselves to stay in this toxic relationship; perhaps they feel like they can't live without this person, and so they are holding on tightly even though they know it's hurting them. The chorus repeats the same message: the singer is hoping that this person can be their saving grace, the one thing that can pull them out of the darkness they feel consumed by.
Overall, the lyrics of Life Support convey a haunting sense of vulnerability and desperation. It's clear that the singer is in a toxic relationship that is consuming them, and they are hoping that this other person can be their salvation. The repeated phrase "could you see that I am yours?" suggests that the singer is willing to give everything to this other person, to make themselves completely vulnerable to them, in the hopes that they can finally break free from the darkness that surrounds them.
