Lay me Down
Sam Smith & John Legend Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That one day I will be where I was
Right there, right next to you
And it's hard, the days just seem so dark
The moon, and the stars are nothing without you
Your touch, your skin, where do I begin?
No words can explain the way I'm missing you
Deny this emptiness, this hole that I'm inside
Told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling's overwhelming, it's much too strong
Can I lay by your side, next to you? You
And make sure you're alright
I'll take care of you
And I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight
I'm reaching out to you
Can you hear my call, boy?
This hurt that I've been through
I'm missing you, I'm missing you like crazy, you
Can I lay by your side? Next to you, to you
And make sure you're alright
I'll take care of you
And I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight
Oh, lay me down tonight
Lay me by your side, whoa
Lay me down tonight
Lay me by your side
Can I lay by your side? Next to you, you
Sam Smith and John Legend's song "Lay Me Down" is a heart-wrenching ballad about missing someone and the overwhelming desire to be with them again. The lyrics are powerful and evoke strong emotions in the listener. The first verse starts with Sam Smith opening up about his belief that he will one day be reunited with the person he misses so much. He describes how difficult it is to be without them, and how everything seems dark and empty without their presence. He longs for their touch and starts to tear up as he describes the depth of his feelings.
The chorus talks about the strong emotions he is experiencing and how he wants to be with this person again. However, he realizes that he can't be with them, and that makes him feel even worse. He is reaching out to this person in the hope that they will hear his cry and understand how much he needs them. The second verse starts with him describing the pain he feels from missing his loved one. He remembers how they told him not to cry, but he can't help it because his emotions are just too strong. He reiterates his desire to be with them again and vows to take care of them if only they would be with him.
Overall, the song is a poignant tale of love and loss, and the powerful emotions that come with missing someone deeply. The chorus, in particular, is incredibly moving, as Sam Smith asks if he can lay down next to his loved one and take care of them as he longingly hopes for their return.

I listen to this song religiously. When my Godmom had cancer, I used to lie right beside her in her bed. Her funeral was today. I'm not asking for pity, but I'm just saying this song will always remind me of her no matter what.
