Down In The Swamp
Samantha Fish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They chew you up and spit you out
Those crocodiles wont touch you now
Gonna burn it up till the morning light
That muddy water never treat you right
I said ooo down in the swamp
I said ooo down in the swamp baby

Won’t hear you scream wont hear you moan
Just remember you’re not alone
A thousand eyes fixed dead on you
Waiting for you now to make your move
I said ooo down in the swamp
I said ooo down in the swamp baby

Can you hear them slither hear them crawl
Cant see nothing I see nothing at all
Youre in black water and full of fear
This beer is what I’ll remember as tears
I said ooo baby on down in the swamp
Ooo I said now babe oh down in the swamp

Ooo yeah oo baby ya no no no no oh down in the swamp
I said ooo on down in the swamp

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Samantha Fish's "Down In The Swamp" bring to life the fearsome and treacherous nature of the swamp, with its hungry crocodiles and all-knowing eyes watching and waiting. The imagery conjured here is one of danger, isolation, and uncertainty, as the singer faces an unknown fate in the murky waters. The lines "They chew you up and spit you out" and "That muddy water never treat you right" speak to the ruthless reality of the swamp, where one wrong move can mean the end. Yet, the chorus "I said ooo down in the swamp...baby" acknowledges the seductive pull of the swamp, a place where one can get lost and never want to leave.

Love this original by Samantha ! Haunting and powerful.
I performed it last week for an Earth Day party / benny, only I do it in "F" and replace 'crocodiles' with 'alligAtahs'.
Reminds me of the groove of a song I did years ago with Hubie Sumlin, but I can't remember the title of the song. ( Hubie sang it, so was kind of hard to understand the lyric. Probably is a variation of an obscure Howlin' Wolf rendition ).
