She began her singing career at the age of eight on Australian radio, and during this time she entered and won several talent quests. By the age of 15 she had her first hit record in Australia, with the song "You Made Me What I Am", and she won a "Best Female Vocalist" award. She quickly became a well known celebrity on Australian television, but she felt her career was limited if she remained in Australia. She travelled to the United Kingdom and performed with such groups as Herman's Hermits, The Hollies and the Bee Gees. Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees wrote "The Love Of A Woman" for her, and her recording became a hit in some European countries.
By the mid 1970s she had changed her name to Samantha Sang, and had moved to the United States where she renewed her acquaintance with the Bee Gees. The Gibb brothers wrote another song for her, which coincided with their huge level of popularity, and the single "Emotion" (with back-up vocals by the Bee Gees) became a major hit worldwide. It reached number 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1978, and earned Sang a platinum record.
Determined to succeed on her own merits, she would not record another Gibb song to capitalise on her success, and chose a disco song, "You Keep Me Dancing" as her next single release. The song did not become a hit, stalling at number 57 in the U.S., and her career faltered.
In 2004, and residing again in Melbourne, Sang announced that she would return to live performing, and that her three albums would be released for the first time on CD.
I Don't Wanna Go
Samantha Sang Lyrics

For making up excuses and all too many times
Wonderin' what the use is now
When nothing's like it used to be
When you and me were all I ever dreamed of
But dreams just don't come true
Just the way we planned them
I still don't understand just how
The feeling comes and goes
So before I start to lie, I want you to know
That I don't wanna go
But I can't stay here no more
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't wanna go
But it's just not like before
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't want you to love me
And oh, how I wish I loved you like I did
You know I did
Did we turn away when we saw it coming?
And could we have been saved
Or would we just keep running scared?
The space became so wide
That no matter how we tried
There was just no place to hide in
I don't wanna go
But I can't stay here no more
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't wanna go
But it's just not like before
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't want you to love me
And oh, how I wish I loved you like I did
You know I did
And now, we don't live the untruth
So before I start to lie i want you to know
Oh, baby
I don't wanna go
But I can't stay here no more
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't wanna go
But it's just not like before
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't want you to love me
And oh, how I wish I loved you like I did
Mmm, you know I did
I don't wanna go
But I can't stay here no more
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't wanna go
But it's just not like before
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't wanna go
But I can't stay here no more
(You don't wanna stay, baby)
I don't wanna go
The lyrics of Samantha Sang's song "I Don't Wanna Go" delve into the conflicting emotions of a failing relationship. The singer expresses their struggle with making excuses and questioning the purpose of staying in a relationship that no longer resembles their dreams. They reminisce about a time when the relationship was all they ever wanted, but now it feels like nothing is as it used to be.
The singer acknowledges that dreams don't always come true the way they were planned. They reflect on the unpredictable nature of feelings, how they come and go without understanding why. Despite this confusion, they want to be honest and upfront. They confess that they don't want to leave, but staying in the relationship is no longer a viable option.
The second verse suggests that the problems in the relationship might have been apparent from early on. The singer wonders if they ignored the warning signs or if the issues were unavoidable. They lament the increasing distance between them, feeling as if there was no place to hide or escape. It becomes clear that the singer wants to confront the truth and not resort to lying anymore.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of resignation and acceptance that the relationship has reached its breaking point. It is no longer sustainable, and staying would only perpetuate the pain. Although the singer admits to wishing they could love their partner as they did before, the reality is that they can't force themselves to remain in a deteriorating relationship.
