Ordinary Life
Samiam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's always restless, just over medicated
Any kind of emotion, feels out of place
Never give your opinion, they've got all the answers
Follow the leader, and remember where you've been

Don't leave, it's not me you know
I can't control, what goes through my mind
So stay, please understand
I don't mean all I've said tonight

Haven't slept for days, and my words don't seem to come out right
It's just a phase that you're going to grow out of when you die
It's alright, you know everything is going to be just fine
Is it too much to ask for, some kind of ordinary life

Two weeks clean, a vague reality
From a lifetime clouded, lost details of your dreams
The will to eat, the pills you need to sleep
Things you never think of, until their always on your mind

Don't leave, it's not me you know
I can't control, what goes through my mind
So stay, please understand
I don't mean all I've said tonight

[Repeat x2]
Haven't slept for days, and my words don't seem to come out right
It's just a phase that you're going to grow out of when you die

It's alright, you know everything is going to be just fine
Is it too much to ask for, some kind of ordinary life

Overall Meaning

The song "Ordinary Life" by Samiam explores feelings of isolation and frustration in a society where individuals are told to conform and follow the crowd. The opening lines describe a woman who struggles with her emotions due to being over-medicated, leading her to feel like she doesn't belong anywhere. The following lines depict a society where opinions are not valued, and people are expected to follow the leader blindly. In contrast, the singer struggles to contain his thoughts and feelings, leading him to push away those who care for him.

The lines "Don't leave, it's not me you know / I can't control, what goes through my mind / So stay, please understand / I don't mean all I've said tonight" showcase the singer's struggle to maintain interpersonal relationships due to his mental state, which makes it difficult for him to control his thoughts and words. The verses highlight the triviality of everyday life, focusing on the mundane struggles that we tend to neglect. The chorus revolves around the question of whether it's too much to ask for an ordinary life, hinting that the singer is longing for simplicity and normalcy.

Every time I hear this song and it's lyrics, it reminds me of the struggles I've had with opiates and how I feel going through detox and the painful psychiatric process of picking up the pieces of my life that I shattered along the way

"never give your opinion, they've got all the answers
follow the leader, and remember where you've been"

Such a powerful statement in a current world where if you give your opinion on social media everyone is gonna bash on you and not to argue with you. These guys predicted these painful days where you can't have an opinion, because if you have one, you can't show it to the world.

1997 - 2017. Nothing has changed.
