Davis, Jr. was born in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, New York, to Elvera Sanchez, a dancer, and Sammy Davis, Sr., an African-American entertainer. The couple were both dancers in vaudeville. As an infant, he was raised by his paternal grandmother. When he was three years old, his parents split up. His father, not wanting to lose custody of his son, took him on tour. Sammy Davis Jr. claimed that his mother was Puerto Rican, however the 2003 biography In Black and White alleges that he made this claim due to the political sensitivities of the 1960s (during the Cuban Missile Crisis), and that his mother was born in New York of Cuban descent rather than in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
As a child he learned how to dance from his father, Sammy Davis, Sr., and his "uncle" Will Mastin, who led the dance troupe his father worked for. Davis joined the act as a young child in 1928 and they became the Will Mastin Trio. Throughout his long career, Davis included the Will Mastin Trio in his billing.
Mastin and his father had shielded him from racism. Snubs were explained as jealousy. But during World War II, Davis served in the United States Army, where he was first confronted by strong racial prejudice. As he said later, "Overnight the world looked different. It wasn't one color anymore. I could see the protection I'd gotten all my life from my father and Will. I appreciated their loving hope that I'd never need to know about prejudice and hate, but they were wrong. It was as if I'd walked through a swinging door for eighteen years, a door which they had always secretly held open.
Ain't That A Kick In The Head

I kissed her and she kissed me
Like the fella once said.
Ain't that a kick in the head.
The room was completely black.
I hugged her and she hugged back.
Like the sailor said quote.Ain't that a hole in the boat.
My head keeps spinning.
I go to sleep and keep grinning.
If this is just the beginning.
My life is gonna be.
Beautiful.
I've got sunshine enough to spread.
It's just like the fella said.
Tell me quick.
Ain't love a kick in the head.
Ain't love a kick in the head.
Ain't that a hole in the boat.
My head keeps spinning.
I go to sleep and keep grinning.
If this is just the beginning.
My life has gotta be.
Beautiful.
She's telling me that we'd be wed.
Man she's picked out a large type bed.
I couldn't feel any better.
Tell me quick.
Please.
Tell me quick.
Tell me quick
Ain't love a kick, kick in the head.
In Sammy Davis Jr.'s song "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," the singer describes the exhilaration of falling in love. He marvels at his good fortune, exclaiming "how lucky can one guy be" after exchanging playful kisses with his sweetheart, one of which took him by surprise and made him feel like he had been kicked in the head. The song's catchy hook, "ain't that a kick in the head," is a metaphor for the unexpected jolt of excitement that love can bring.
Davis Jr. uses a series of similes and quotes to further illustrate how he is feeling. He compares his hug with his sweetheart to a sailor finding a hole in his boat, indicating that the embrace was so satisfying it might have caused a catastrophe. He goes on to describe how his head is "spinning," and how he can't seem to stop grinning. He imagines a bright future full of happiness, saying "my life is gonna be beautiful," and confesses that his sweetheart has even suggested they get a "large type bed," hinting at physical intimacy.
Overall, "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" is a playful and upbeat tribute to the joys of love. Davis Jr.'s smooth voice and catchy lyrics make for a memorable listening experience that celebrates the excitement and passion associated with falling in love.
