As Long as She Needs Me
Sammy Davis Jr. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As long as she needs me
I know where I must be
I'll cling on steadfastly
As long as she needs me

As long as life is long
I'll love her right or wrong
And somehow, I'll be strong
As long as she needs me

If you are lonely
Then you will know
When someone needs you
You love them so

I won't betray her trust
Though some folks say I must
I've got to stay true just
As long as she needs me

When you need someone
You love them so

I won't betray her trust
Though people tell me I must

I've gotta stay true just
As long as she needs me

Overall Meaning

Sammy Davis Jr's song As Long as She Needs Me is a passionate declaration of loyalty and commitment. The lyrics suggest that the singer will always be there for the one he loves, like a rock, no matter what challenges or obstacles may come his way. He knows that his partner depends on him, and therefore he must remain steadfast to support her. The song's chorus repeatedly asserts this devotion, and the singer pledges to remain true and honorable, regardless of what the outside world may say or do.

The lyrics also reflect on the reciprocity of love, suggesting that when someone needs us, we love them even more. This is a universal sentiment, as it speaks to the fundamental human desire for connection and meaningful relationships. The singer is also aware that he must be strong, both emotionally and physically, to support his partner. The repetition of the phrase "as long as she needs me" emphasizes the song's central message of unwavering devotion, and the idea that true love means being there for someone through thick and thin.

Total entertainer! Can't get enough of his wonderful voice. No Wonder my father adored him so much. So much that he named my elder brother Samuel and the youngest, George. The 2 names of Sammy Davis, Jr.

I have always felt that Sammy Davis Jr. was one of the best singers ever. Multi-talented man.

@DamoNSW

My mum and dad went to see Sammy in Sydney AU 1980. I remember seeing the tickets stamped at $50 each, and I nearly fell over. This was about the same time KISS toured, and their tickets were about $20 (from memory), maybe less
Anyway, I can thank my dad for introducing me to the greatest crooners (of that era), to which Sammy was one of the best. I know music has changed, and there really is no room for these types of voices anymore, but thank God they existed back then...Perry, Andy, Tony Christie, Gary Puckett............what voices
This was one of my dads favorite songs - rest in peace
