Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends
Sammy Davis Jr. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This could be our last goodnight together
We may never pass this way again
Just let me enjoy 'till its over
Or forever
Please don't tell me how the story ends

See the way our shadows come together
Softer than your fingers on my skin
Someday this may be all
That we'll remember
Of each other
Please don't tell me how the story ends

Never's just the echo of forever
Lonesome as the love that might have been
Just let me go on loving and believing
'Till it's over
Please don't tell me how the story ends

Please don't tell me how the story ends

Overall Meaning

Sammy Davis Jr's "Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends" is a poignant ballad that's open to interpretation. The song explores the fear of the unknown and the desire to savor the moment, to keep enjoying each other's company until it's not possible anymore. In the opening lines, the singer acknowledges that this could be their last night together and implores the other person not to ruin the moment by speculating about the future or how this story will end. He cherishes this moment so much that he'd rather remain oblivious and just live in the present.

The second verse of the song compares the shadows of the two individuals blending together to the feeling of fingers touching skin. The singer is suggesting that this moment, this interaction is intimate and should be enjoyed without the dreary thought of the future looming over it. In the chorus, Davis sings "Never's just the echo of forever/Lonesome as the love that might have been/Just let me go on loving and believing/Till it's over/Please don't tell me how the story ends." Here he is urging his lover to allow him to love them while they are together, and not consider the possibility of "never."

The song ends, as it began, with the fear of the end or what comes after, essentially saying: "I'd rather keep my head in the sand and not let that end come into view, and continue to enjoy this moment blissfully."

One of my favourite songs by Sammy. I think he is so underrated.

Janetta McGee

I've loved this song since I first heard it by country singer Ronnie Millsap back in the mid-70's. I bought a used CD at Goodwill about 6 months ago that had various artists on it. This was one of the songs and I'd never heard this version. Sammy does this so differently and I like it the best. I play it over and over. Sammy could sing any style and make it better. And he could dance and act. He was amazing.

I met and talked with him as a child back in '63 on a set at WB in Burbank. He was a very nice man. A few years ago, I unexpectantly saw his grave in a private area at Forrest Lawn in Glendale.
