You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You
Sammy Davis Jr. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're nobody till somebody loves you
You're nobody till somebody cares
You might be king, you might possess, the world and its gold
But gold won't bring you happiness, when you're growing old

The world still is the same
You'll never change it
As sure as the stars shine above
You're nobody till somebody loves you

So find yourself somebody to love

Overall Meaning

Sammy Davis Jr.'s song "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" is a poignant reflection on the human need for connection and love. The lyrics assert that no amount of material success, wealth, or power can replace the emotional satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from loving and being loved by another person. The song starts with the line "You're nobody till somebody loves you," which implies that one's sense of self-worth is contingent on the acceptance and affection of others. This assertion is reinforced in the following lines, "You might be king, you might possess the world and its gold, but gold won't bring you happiness when you're growing old." These lines suggest that even if someone has achieved all possible external measures of success, they will still feel incomplete and unfulfilled if they lack love.

The next lines in the song, "The world still is the same, you'll never change it, as sure as the stars shine above," invoke a sense of resignation to the unchanging nature of the world. The message that comes across is that while we may not be able to alter or control external circumstances, we do have the ability to change our internal state. And we can do this by cultivating personal relationships filled with meaning, connection, and love. The song ends with the hopeful message, "So find yourself somebody to love," which encourages listeners to seek out and cherish the relationships that sustain and enliven us, as they are the true source of happiness and fulfillment.

Sammy out-lounged Ol' Blue Eyes and Dino both on this rendition and he out-swung the heck out of everyone else. Live from the Sands in Vegas... sadly he couldn't go in the front door and had to use the employees entrance in the alley. Also had to stay in a hotel outside town (out in Summerland)

Hard times then...
