New York
Sammy Davis Jr. & Frank Sinatra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I want to be a part of it
New York, New York
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it
New York, New York
I want to wake up, in a city that doesn't sleep
Top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York, New York
New York, New York
I want to wake up in a city that never sleeps
And find I'm a number one, top of the list
King of the hill, a number one
These little town blues, are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
And
If I can make it there
I'm gonna make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York
New York
New York
The lyrics of "New York, New York" by Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra speak to the allure and magnetic pull of New York City. The opening line, "start spreadin' the news, I'm leavin' today", suggests that the singer is saying goodbye to their old life and setting out to find a new one in the city that never sleeps. The next few lines, "I want to be a part of it, New York, New York", express a desire to become one with the city and its energy.
The chorus, "I want to wake up, in a city that doesn't sleep, and find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap", showcases the ambition and drive that the city instills in its inhabitants. The lines "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere, It's up to you, New York, New York" suggest that the city is not an easy place to succeed but also hold immense promise and potential for those who are willing to work hard.
The last verse repeats the chorus, adding in the line "And find I'm a number one, top of the list" reiterating the idea that New York City is a place where dreams can come true, and where one can reach the pinnacle of success. Overall, the song "New York, New York" is a celebration of the city's energy, optimism, and potential.

I don't think it is possible to underestimate this man's character and talent. Let's be honest, for him to make it in the US post war, from the 50's through to his death is a testimony to not just his talent but his character - and hats off to Frank and Co for supporting him.
