Dreams
Sammy Hagar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

World turns black and white
Pictures in an empty room
Your love starts fallin' down
Better change your tune
Yeah, you reach for the golden ring
Reach for the sky
Baby, just spread your wings
We'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
We'll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind
Run, run, run away
Like a train runnin' off the track
Got the truth bein' left behind
Falls between the cracks
Standin' on broken dreams
Never losin' sight, ah
Well just spread your wings
We'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
We'll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind
So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you've cried
Oh, that's what dreams are made of
'Cause we belong in a world that must be strong
Oh, that's what dreams are made of
Yeah, we'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
Higher and higher
Leave it all behind
Oh, we'll get higher and higher
Who knows what we'll find?
So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you've cried
Oh, that's what dreams are made of
Oh baby, we belong in a world that must be strong
Oh, that's what dreams are made of

And in the end on dreams we will depend
'Cause that's what love is made of

Overall Meaning

The song "Dreams" by Sammy Hagar is about reaching for your goals and dreams, even when things are tough. The first verse describes a world that seems black and white and empty, with love falling apart. Hagar encourages the listener to "reach for the golden ring" and "spread your wings" to achieve their dreams and reach greater heights. The chorus repeats the line "We'll get higher and higher" as a rallying cry for the listener to leave their old life behind and focus on their dreams.

The second verse uses the metaphor of a train running off the tracks and "broken dreams" to represent the challenges that can come with chasing our dreams. Hagar encourages the listener to keep going and never lose sight of their goals. The bridge of the song urges the listener to keep pushing forward in the face of adversity, with the ultimate goal being to belong in a world that is strong.

Overall, "Dreams" is a motivational song about perseverance and the power of chasing after our dreams, even when it's tough. It encourages listeners to reach higher and never give up on what they truly want.

Heard this song when i woke up , a message from the Divine, so I came to look it up and listen, Truely a message for all! ~HMP

On Dave’s best day he was not one tenth the singer/musician that Sammy still is. Early Van Halen has raw power and was incredible, but musically Sammy raised the bar by leaps and bounds.

When I got to sit in my electric wheelchair on stage at one of Sammy's concerts he came over and said hello 2x during the show and patted me on the shoulder. :) Cej, quadriplegic of 35 years.

Such a nice Van Hagar song. Despite my being in a small minority, I like the Sammy Van Halen, which was the most melodic Van Halen, & it is my favorite Van Halen iteration. Thanks, Richard

As a kid, I was a fan of a LOT of Rock stars..., but as I grew up, I realised that Sammy is the one guy who NEVER disappoints his fans, and NEVER engages in disappointing behaviour... unlike some I could mention! πŸ˜‰

@paulamartin9998

I agree with you! VH was the best with Sammy’s song-writing ability and his very cool voice!! David Lee Who??? πŸ˜‚

For a specific era, Roth's voice was great. The difference is that Hagar's voice is evergreen! He's the gift that keeps on giving. He's never lost his decorum or his vocal ability, and I'm quite convinced he never will. Simply put, Sammy Hagar is the Undefeated & Undefeatable World Champion of Rock & Roll!

@bobwinters6459

Absolutely loved the Van Hagar era! Wish Eddie and Sammy could bury the hatchet and reunite (with Michael of course)!

@christianfoster3806

100% agree. Sammy is the best thing that happened to VH. They've done nothing but flounder since he left. Sammy is one of my favorite characters in hard rock; one of the most underrated singers and guitarists in the business. I like how he just moved on from VH and kept doing what he does, while the brothers faded into irrelevance. It's like Sam and Mike were the only adults in the band. Chickenfoot! The Circle. I'm amazed that he is 66 when this was recorded. He looks and sounds like he's 36.
