When an old friend I happened to see
I introduced him/her to my loved one and while they were dancin'
My friend stole my sweetheart from me
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Now I know just how much I have lost
Yes, I lost my little darlin' the night they were playing
I was dancin' with my darlin' to the Tennessee Waltz
When an old friend I happened to see
I introduced him/her to my loved one and while they were dancin'
My friend stole my sweetheart from me
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Now I know just how much I have lost
Yes, I lost my little darlin' the night they were playing
The beautiful Tennessee Waltz
The lyrics of the Tennessee Waltz by Sammy Kaye describe a story of love, betrayal and heartbreak. The singer is dancing with their beloved to the slow and melancholic tune of the Tennessee Waltz when they spot an old friend. They graciously introduce their friend to their lover and watch as they begin to dance together. However, as the night goes on, the friend seduces and steals the singer’s lover away from them. The singer is left reeling in the aftermath, overwhelmed by the pain of losing their beloved.
The lyrics are poetic in their simplicity and powerfully convey a sense of loss and betrayal. The use of the Tennessee Waltz as the backdrop for this story adds to the poignancy of the lyrics, as the waltz is often associated with nostalgia and longing. The repetition of the chorus at the end of each stanza emphasizes the emotional impact of the story and reinforces the message that the singer has lost something precious.
