Living Room Floor
Sammy Rae Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woke up nearly six ′o clock
It was our last day in Vermont
One of us was still missing
Staying at Tommy's place
Doing nothing but playing for no pay
And anybody who wanted to listen

Tommy had a buddy had turned 21
At midnight just a couple hours before
And I looked to my left, seen him wake up laughing
On a blanket, on some bullshit
All alone on the living room floor
On the living room floor

And I keep a portrait in my pocket
Of myself the year I got stung
By that silly man, woah
You could see the fire in my eyes
When he fired off to no surprise
He didn′t come to give a damn

And the bottle of merlot fell over
When he got up to go
And finally slammed the door
Wait, what have we got left?
Seen it come up easy
Blood and baking soda
Scrubbing on my rug on the living room floor
On the living room floor
On the living room floor

And I am in my own lane
I will not let myself down
I am in my own place
I am my own house
And I am in my own lane
I will not let myself down
I am in my own place
I am my own house

I am in my own lane
I will not let myself down
And sing it, I am in my own place
I am my own house
I am in my own lane
I will not let myself down
I am in my own place
I am my own house
Yes, indeed I am

And when my old man come to visit
He said, "Is it ever tough to look back?
Does it get too loud?"
Woah, ah
"Do you ever wish
You could have done them things you never done?
"Are you sentimental mama, are you proud?"
Woah, oh

"And you didn't have to order out for me
I know it's something that you can′t afford
Have you got any left?"
Tell him babe, I made this with my own hands
Ain′t it something, sitting cross-legged

'Cause we haven′t got a table yet, oh
Saving up, gonna get a few chairs, get a whole set
And I got my bed and my closet and a living room floor

Woah, I got a living room floor
And I got it deep down in my soul

Overall Meaning

The song "Living Room Floor" by Sammy Rae narrates the singer's experiences on her last day in Vermont, where she is staying with some friends. The song starts with the waking up of an unknown time (almost 6'o clock) on the last day of their stay. One of the friends is still at Tommy's place playing without getting paid, while anyone who wanted to listen could hear them play. Sammy Rae sees Tommy's friend who had just turned 21 and woken up laughing on a blanket alone on the living room floor, which could imply a celebration of his birthday. Then, the lyrics talk about how she keeps a portrait in her pocket of herself when she got stung, which had fire in her eyes, enthusiastic, and how someone fired off to no surprise. Some other events that happened while staying at Sammy Rae's friend's house in Vermont involved scrubbing his rug, which had blood and baking soda, and some bottles of Merlot falling over.

Throughout the song, Sammy Rae asserts her confidence and self-sufficient nature. She talks about being in her own lane, in her own place, and not letting herself down. She describes how, even though her father comes to visit, she does not order anything too expensive for him to eat, as she knows she cannot afford it. When her father asks if she wishes to do things she never did before, she responds that she is proud of herself. She sings how she has her own bed, closet, and living room floor, indicating that she does not need anything else to build her home.

In summary, "Living Room Floor" reflects an experience in Vermont full of music, alcohol, and friends that led Sammy Rae to appreciate her own independence and self-worth.

Sammy's voice has such a multidimensional tone, it's like every wrinkle of the sound could map perfectly to a part of your own life.

@Basomic

Sammy & Friends! This song is sooo beautiful! The strings! The choir! As hard as these last months have been, my favorite thing to have come from it has been discovering your incredible music and the involuntary dancing that's resulted on my own Living Room Floor. Thank you for the added little joy your music brings and the smile it always brings to my face. You better believe you'll be the first band I'll buy tickets for when it's safe again. Much love!

Edit: I also love that the driving kick drum at 3:06 comes in at the end of the song. Normally, I'd expect something like that more towards the beginning, but really cool choice to have it at the end

Edit 2: The more I listen, the more I'd love to hear an instrumental reprise version of this song! The instrumentation is too beautiful not to

Why is Samy Rae so underrated? Genuinely curious.
