1) Sanctuary is a heavy metal band founded in Seattle, Washington in 1985 consisting of Warrel Dane (vocals), Lenny Rutledge (guitar), Sean Blosl (guitar), Jim Sheppard (bass), and Dave Budbill (drums). Former Metallica and Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine was the influential force in getting the band signed to Epic Records. He produced their first album and played guitar on their cover of Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit. The band was dissolved in 1991, following pressure from Epic Records to fit in with the flourishing Seattle grunge scene. Warrel Dane and Jim Sheppard disagreed with this change, and left to form Nevermore.
In May 2010 Warrel Dane stated that Santuary were to reform with the original line-up to record a new album and tour.

Eden Lies Obscured

Is there a place in time where war and peace collide?
Our lives begin naked and unknowing
Given time we spoil as desire shapes our will
Sing unto me sinners, the masses are on fire
The flames skin deep through the core of life
Fading in the distant haze the myths we've made burn on
Sing a song of sadness of lunacy's mad lore
Bastardized by the dogs of war
A woman still pure made a whore
Leaders throughout history killed for Eden's gain
No one knows where Eden lies
Between hope and fantasy so pure
No one knows where Eden lies
Fools sits on high so Eden lies obscured
From our view
Inside your mind is the key to the garden's gate
The quest for Eden leads us on, fuel to theorize
Is there a place in time where war and peace collide?
Sing unto me sinners and share with me your minds
The keys to knowledge we seek to find
Those who conform push thorns in our eyes
But still I persist join in my cause
For change is eclipsed by apathy
No one knows where Eden lies
Fools sit on high, so Eden lies obscured
Sanctuary's song "Eden Lies Obscured" serves as a commentary on humanity's perpetual search for a utopia, using the myth of the Garden of Eden as a metaphor. The song opens with the lines, "The quest for Eden leads us on, fuel to theorize/Is there a place in time where war and peace collide?" This suggests that there is a deep longing within humanity to discover a place where there is no conflict and where life is perfect, but that this dream may be unattainable.
The lyrics go on to explore how human desire often leads to destruction and chaos, as people strive to achieve their goals at any cost. The lines "Our lives begin naked and unknowing/Given time we spoil as desire shapes our will" suggest that as humans grow and mature, they become corrupted by their own desires and that this corruption leads to conflict and strife.
The chorus of the song reiterates the notion that the Garden of Eden may be a myth, with the lines "No one knows where Eden lies/Between hope and fantasy so pure/No one knows where Eden lies/Fools sit on high so Eden lies obscured from our view." The final line suggests that those who claim to know where the utopia lies may actually be fools, and that the search for Eden may be an insurmountable task.
Overall, the song presents a complex and nuanced critique of humanity's search for a utopian society, acknowledging the desire for peace and harmony, but also recognizing the destructiveness of unfettered human desire.
