Clown
Sande Emeli Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I guess it's funnier from where you're standing
'Cause from over here I miss the joke
Clear the way for my crash landing
I've done it again
Another number for your notes

I'd be smiling if I wasn't so desperate
I'd be patient if I had the time
I could stop and answer all of your questions
As soon as I find out
How I can move from the back of the line

I'll be your clown
Behind the glass
Go 'head and laugh
'Cause it's funny
I would too if I saw me
I'll be your clown
On your favorite channel
My life's a circus, circus
Round in circle
I'm selling out tonight

I'd be less angry if it was my decision
And the money was just rolling in
If I had more than my ambition
I'll have time for please
I'll have time for thank you
As soon as I win

I'll be your clown
Behind the glass
Go 'head and laugh
'Cause it's funny
I would too if I saw me
I'll be your clown
On your favorite channel
My life's a circus, circus
Round in circus
I'm selling out tonight

From a distance my choice is simple
From a distance I can entertain
So you can see me
I put makeup on my face
But there's no way you can feel it
From so far away

I'll be your clown
Behind the glass
Go 'head and laugh
'Cause it's funny
I would too if I saw me
I'll be your clown
On your favorite channel
My life's a circus, circus

Round in circles
I'm selling out tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sande Emeli's song Clown seem to be about the inner feelings and struggles of a performer or artist. The artist or performer in this song is feeling unappreciated, and that their work is not valued. There is a sense of desperation and hopelessness that comes across through the lines, such as "I'd be patient if I had the time," and "I'll be your clown."

The use of the word "clown" is significant as it is often associated with the circus, which is all about performance, spectacle, and entertainment. The metaphor of the clown in the song suggests that the performer is putting up a façade or costume to be able to entertain others, but that they are hiding their true emotions, feelings, and hardships behind this veil.

The lyrics also touch on the theme of distance, both literal and emotional. The performer's choice to put on makeup and entertain from behind the glass suggests a sense of detachment, both from the audience and their own emotions, creating a sense of loneliness and isolation. However, they also seem to be aware of their own situation, and that being able to entertain others from afar is the only way they can survive.

Overall, the lyrics to Clown are an exploration of the inner workings of an artist or performer, and the struggle between keeping up appearances and addressing their own pains and hardships.
