Puppet On a String
Sandie Shaw Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wonder if one day that,
You'll say that, you care
If you say you love me madly,
I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string

Love is just like a merry-go-round
With all the fun of the fair
One day I'm feeling down on the ground
Then I'm up in the air
Are you leading me on?
Tomorrow will you be gone?

I wonder if one day that,
You'll say that, you care
If you love me madly,
I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string

I may win on the roundabout
Then I'll lose on the swings
In or out, there is never a doubt
Just who's pulling the strings
I'm all tied up to you
But where's it leading me to?

I wonder if one day that,
You'll say that, you care
If you say you love me madly,
I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string

I wonder if one day that,
You'll say that, you care
If you say you love me madly,
I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string

Like a puppet on a, string

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sandie Shaw's "Puppet On a String" seem to be about the uncertainty and insecurity that come with falling in love. The singer wonders if one day the person they love will express their feelings and show that they care. They describe themselves as being like a puppet on a string, always under the control of someone else. Love is compared to a merry-go-round, with its ups and downs and unpredictability. The singer questions if their love interest is leading them on and if they will disappear tomorrow. There is a sense of being tangled up with this person, but not knowing where it will lead.

The use of the metaphor of a puppet on a string is particularly poignant. It suggests that the singer is not in control and that they are at the mercy of someone else. The idea of being tied up and led around is also present, creating a feeling of helplessness. The chorus, where the singer asks if their love interest will one day care and express their love, is particularly powerful, highlighting the uncertainty and longing that comes with falling in love. The verses talk about the back and forth of love, with its highs and lows, highlighting that in love, nothing is certain.

In a beautiful park as a child I listened to this song.. at the tearoom was a glass box with a stringed puppet inside dancing to it. Today it's so relevant a memory, and such pertinence to my life that i could never have forseen.
